You need to get a Sporting Rifle take down manual by J.B.Wood.It is more involved than most of us can explain on line.

It has been my experience that the typical 742 shooter shoots it until it jams up or breaks and then takes it to a gun show and trades or sells it. Been burned by several, won't buy anymore.

YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE BARREL (LARGE NUT UNDER THE FOREND), AND THE OPERATING HANDLE (SMALL PIN, FROM THE TOP DOWN). BEST LEFT TO A GUNSMITH.

When you take that pin out be very careful you don't loose it. it's tiny and has a liking to jump to dark corners of your shop. Brownells has replacements. You also need a special wrench to take off that barell nut. Or if your careful you can get it with a vice grip or channel lock pliers. I always chew it up though, along with the action bars next to it.
