When I get antsy I go shoot some guns. It might help to blow away some of his frustration.

I quit smoking right at 5 years ago. I set the date/time a couple of days in advance, then at noon that day I tossed away all but one of my cigarettes. I put that one cigarette where I kept my wallet, glasses and keys at night and every time I felt like having a smoke I'd go take a big whif of that cigarette. I'd smell it a couple of times then put it down and go do something else. The first couple of days were real tough, but before I knew it a week had gone by, then another, and soon I was at my 1 year anniversary. If he can make it past 3 days then the physical addiction to Nicotine will be broken and all he has to contend with is the mental addiction.

    Good luck.

the physical addiction is the easy part. the mental addiction is what kills people. just about anybody can stop something for 72hrs but the mental game can last for a long time. my father, who quit like 15yrs ago still has cravings

i hope he does well. i havent had any luck dropping this horrible habit. hope he fares better....

Quit for the second time in '86. Still get an urge once in a while. It always passes if I smoke one or not, haven't so I guess I'm done with them. Do NOT take up dipping, that's even harder to stop.

I gave up dipping some weeks ago. That was tough, but I started smoking more to compensate.

Hardest habit in the world to break. I suggest spending an afternoon with someone that has emphazima (SP). Either that or buy a few packs of Canadian cigs. Smoking that N. of the Border is about enough to cure anyone.

Smoking one thing I have never been able to understand? Why does anyone set a tobacco filled piece of paper in their mouth, set it on fire and breathe the smoke into their lungs?Dipping Im sure most will say is as bad,Im still jogging almost every day and not destroying my Heart and lungs. As for now it appears something may be doing that anyway,or at least to my liver? This should help with quiting, smoke in a well lighted room and you will see just how much smoke hangs around in that room.Your loved ones in that room are breathing that very harmful smoke. You are harming them as bad or worse than yourself when you smoke indoors.I noticed this at a relatives one morning when the sun was shining in bright. It looked like clouds of smoke rolling in the room.We have a smoke free home(my wife doesnt smoke either)but notice the ceilings of someone who allows smoking and you can see the tar stains.I wish you luck and plenty of mind power.

Since I have never had to give up smoking tobacco cigarettes, I will refrain from giving advice on how to quit. If, however, you need advice on how to give up other smoked substances, I might be better able to offer advice.

Good luck to him.... I quit roughly about four months ago. You can expect him to get real cranky. I did. I was pretty sure that my wife wanted to buy me a whole carton just to return me to normal. it'll pass... again, good luck to him .... and you.

    Good luck David.
I quit smoking about two months ago. Still dip, but not as much
as before. My wife bought me a can of mint packets (like Bandits, but
no tobacco), they work pretty good. When I decide to quit dipping I
    will use them.

I quit when I was 33 after the docs saw something on a chest X-ray Turned out to be an artifact but it still scared me into quiting. I had been smoking since I was 10(yes 10) when I got caught stealing my brothers cigarettes. Dad made me smoke an entire box of cigars trying to make me sick. It didn't happen, I just started stealing the old man's Kink Edwards. Coming up on 11 years and when I go into a bar or anyplace someones smoking a good cigar I still want to light up

Seriously, back in Feb. I got sick with the flu (or whatever it was that was going around).

I quit for right at 4 weeks. After 3 weeks, I NEVER FELT BETTER!

I didn't have the cravings that some talk about and being around smokers didn't bother me. [8D]

Why I started smoking again? [?] I have no idea. [V][xx(] I just grabbed one of the wifes smokes and lit it up. Been smoking ever since. [V]

    At least I'm not back up to 2+ packs a day..........yet. [:0][B)]

I NEED to quit again. [8D]

Attitude is important. I quit after more than 20 years because some how I knew it would kill me, so I really wanted to quit. So it was easier than I thought. Having said this thread is giving me one of those rare jonsey feelings. I guess you never loose it completely. Cigs will kill you Nunn, good luck.

We have a sign at my Lodge with a picture of a headstone and the quote,"Sooner or later everybody stops smoking!). It gave me a little encouragement to stay the course. Dawnie, be supportive and love him more for trying to help himself live a longer and happier life with you and the kids.

Never had the habit, so I don't have any advise to give.

Well, maybe I was just lucky, but I "lost it" completely and Nunn can too. I started smoking unfiltered Camels in bootcamp in the Corps because after putting up with the DI's kicking/working our butts off and then also beating the crap out of us for minor mistakes, a cigarette was the only "pleasure" I could find. Smoked for over 10 years and loved it. Used to wake up in the AM, roll over and light up a smoke and finish it, get up, fix a nice cup of hot tea and smoke another one. By then I felt GREAT!

But then I got tired of going around stinking and coughing plus worry about lung cancer. Quit cold turkey (only way avaiable in 1970) and WILL NEVER GO BACK! I could light a cigarette for you today (even when drinking or after a meal) and hand it to you without any desire to continue smoking or even wanting to inhale.

folks, you CAN defeat that devil Mr. Nicotine. Just be strong and it all becomes good.

P.S. even if you cut down to only one cigarette A WEEK you are still a smoker. Stop competely before you even thing about counting the days as being a "former smoker" such as me. JMHO
