Computer help- no sound!

I just built a computer, a P4 with XP. Everything is find, but no sound! It has an integrated audio jack on the motherboard, which is a foxconn 400 series. I checked the bios, and the computer knows when the speakers are plugged in, just, no sound. And no, it isn't muted, I checked all that. No sound, Neither from sound files on the hard drive or the cd drive. I can't help but think there is some connection I'm missing; is there a connection to anywhere for an integrated jack? I can't imagine where. Could a jumper setting be off? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Driver for sound card?

If you installed SP2 all driver would roll back to basic drivers and may need to be updated.

    Your mileage may vary.

The audio drivers came with the motherboard cd actually, so I don't think the windows updates were the problem.

Ok, I updated drivers, still doesn't work. I might just say to hell with it and buy a cheap sound card.

It's possible that your integrated audio is working. This is just a thought, but is your output Digital or Analog matching up with Digital or Analog speakers, it does matter. If I have an Analog sound card and plug in a digital speaker system it will not work. Also, I don't know about your MOBO in particular but Intel boards do have a jumper to route the audio signals to the front panel. These jumpers have a default setting to the rear. My .02

My only other thought would be to double check in the Bios that it is configured to use the onboard audio

I had the same problem after sending my computer out to an "expert" to have up-dated. I fixed it myself after going through the same process that you are going through!! The reason I didn't reply right away, I was trying to remember what I found wrong. Can't remember what I found so can't be of any help. I did connect powered speakers and I got sound. After finding problem, went back to original speakers and now works fine.
Hang in there, jonk, just relax, take a deep breath and keep on looking. I'm sure you will find the problem, as you have come this far building a computer !! Good luck and don't get frustrated, you'll find it.

If your still having the problem you might want to flash the Bios to the newest version, that might take care of any hardware or software issues.
