F aux Supressor???

I picked up a very nice piece of 2" copper pipe on the job today about four feet long and thought about making a f aux suppressor. I wouldn't think it would be illegal since I know the GSG 22's that look like MP-5's come with a fake suppressor. I figured as long as i don't install the baffles than it would not be a concern to the ATF. Does this sound logical or is there concern. I realize that the government is not logical so I would like others opinions.

at worst if a cop saw it on your firearm he might check it out, as long as you could show it didn`t have baffles you should be ok with it. there are plenty of fake ones for sale on the auction side.

Well yes, no, kinda sorta. While it is not a grey area it kinda is.

The ATF says anything that reduces the noise of a firearm IS a silencer = requires NFA registration. There is nothing grey there.

Will adding a piece of pipe to the end of your gun make it any quieter? With out a quality db meter there is no way to be 100% sure. It does not matter if it has baffles or not.

On the GSG they are not a faux silencer, they are a barrel cover. The faux silencer on the GSG does not extend past the end of the barrel.

There are many faux silencers on the market with many different designs and materials. While in theory they dont reduce the sound of a firearm IF the ATF proved that it did on YOUR gun then you would have an illegal (assuming not registered) silencer.

Does that make it any clearer [:o)]

I bought a Gemtech to put on the end of my ps90 and it cost me money to bail out of jail even though they dropped the charges. Don't do it. Don't have all the pieces at one time to put one together. 10 yrs automatic.

You need more details. What are you talking about. All what pieces? Silencers are 100% legal if registered properly.

I need more details or you need more details. I got pulled over for out of date tags on my hunting rig and the Hiway patrol saw my rifle, keep in mind I was on my way back from hunting bobcats in OK, it was a fake. Purely for asthetics, no stamp required but they didn't care. Jailed anyway until I posted bail because I would rather not sit there until they got thier crap straight. Help?

Well I am not a lawyer or a LEO but sounds like a serious case of false arrest to me. Since I was not there to know the exact details the only thing I can say is there is something seriously wrong with that.

So, if you have it registered properly do they make you carry a permit with the weapon at all times to prove that it is properly registered? Do they put a barcode tattoo on your forearm?

and to add to that, if they really wanted to get you they could just hammer you with attempting to mfg. I wouldn't play with it. It does nothing for the gun in any way, and could just lead to way too many headaches down the road.

Well would still end up the same place. It is not illegal to make NFA items if you do the proper paperwork. To legally build your own silencer you just fill out a Form 1 and submit it with the $200 tax to the ATF.

No, but I do carry a small copy of my tax stamp.
It is actually illegal for a LEO to ask to see the paperwork because it is priveleged tax info.

no I fully understand that. In missouri we have to get our c&r first THE apply for the tax stamp [xx(]. I would say it is a little too much to go through for a fake tube

I would agree but I choose not to pursue it. I was driving with out of date tags and I could have avoided my own blunder. There was something wrong with that arrest though, I wasn't read my rights until 12 hours later when the judge showed up. Go figure.

Question #2, I have read a good bit on construction of these and know several members here who have made there own. If I where to go the stamp route to legally make one and it proves to be more trouble than its worth could I destroy what I have assembled and purchase one instead with out needing a second stamp?

It might suppress muzzle flash. If you live in California you'll get popped for that.

I would love me a place that makes fake cans the size of a beer can with any brand anodized on it. I think a Pabst fake can would be cool.

I'd like to see you heat up a length of copper pipe and make it crack!
When you accomplish this feat, show me a picture.

I have a better Idea smart *. Take your plumbing skills and make fake silencer for your weapon. Shoot a few hundred rounds in it, let it sit for a day and then go to the range and repeat. The heat will change the alignment of the molecules on the copper tubing and will allow it to crack under pressure. I'm sure you heat up copper all day but do you have it placed under the pressure of a muzzle blast?

How many silencers do you see made out of copper?

Yeah, I don't know poop about metals or anything... Go ahead and make a freaking copper silencer..

Jesus H Christ some people are nuts.

WCI, if you are going to make a silencer be sure to check local laws first. Some states it is illegal to own a silencer even with a stamp.

To build you fill out a Form 1 and submit $200 and wait. When it is returned approved only then are you allowed to build one. If you decide not to build it then you will have a piece of worthless paper and a stamp that cost you $200. If you start building it and quit then those parts will ALWAYS be silencer parts and require proper transfer or be properly destroyed.

If you buy a can it will be on a Form 4 and no they are not the same and no you can not change your mind and use it for the other.
