edited April 2005 in General Discussion
I am just about done with my newest toy, [a fully custom 243, on a mauser action, with all the neat little changes]
Now my question is What size to build next, heres the guidelines
No wildcat calb.
Must be avail. ammo.
will be built on 98 or 48 mauser action
Will use Douglas Double X barrel or better grade
give me your ideas, this newest one will be used on Blk Bear, Deer, & Elk.

    How about a 375 H&H mag or a 300 weatherby mag.

Tkere's dozens of .30 cals out there that will handle those animals. You probably already own 2 or 3. Why not build something no one else has: a .22 LR double barreled box lock rifle for rabbits and squirrels, iron sights, about 5 or 6 lbs in weight?

    .260 Rem Why not???

Very suitable for the game you mention with the 140 gr bullets. They come in Partitions for the Elk too. Very nice sectional density numbers assure good penetration.

Low recoil, accurate, and great killing power in a short action!

    Your choice seems clear.

    DL,

You bet. I just got a 700 LSS Mountain Rifle in .260 and am working up loads right now. First is going to be the 95 grain Hornady V-Max for coyotes and varmints. My Whitetail load will probably be the Hornady 129 grain Interlock or SST. We'll see which works up the best.

I do like them Hornady bullets...and Reloder 15 has treated me well in my .308 so that is what I am starting with. Will try Varget as well.

7X57 loaded to todays pressures in a good barrel,...and you keep it sort of authentic. Use a 9 twist or better and 150-160gr bullets, and you have a great 300-400yd rifle.

If not, a 6.5x55 would be good as well,....but far more premium ammo is available for the 260 or even better, the 7mm-08.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?

Why not build an absolutely tack-driving .300 Savage? Think about it; If you handload you can shoot anything from 110 to 180gr and get ALL KINDS of performance with really minimal recoil! Just my $.02

.257 Roberts. Retro is cool, and its a great caliber. Low recoil, and with the right bullet its good for everything from crow/groundhog to whitetails.

edit: Sorry,I didn't read what you were wanting to hunt. The Roberts is a little small for that type of game. How about a .338 Winchester Mag?

Can you do something with the WSM line? I think a .270WSM would make a fine rifle for what you want to do with it. From the ballistic table I just looked at you can load it with just about anything from 130gr. to a 160gr. Partition.

[:I][^]I did not read what you were using it on[B)] How about a 7mm RUM?...or a 270AI. I know you said no wildcats, but the AI's are easy to form (fire formed) and there is an abundance of brass and bullets for it.?.?

I skipped the last sentence in your original post and then I read a couple of posts down, where you said you didn't like heavy recoil...hence my first suggestion of HB 220 Swift.

Stop fooling around with the little bittie stuff!
How about 6.5 inch blackpowder mortor, that shoots 12 pound bowling balls.
And you can use it in blackpowder season too.
Seen one take the roof off a car at 500yrds, hit the front post,
ripped the top up then it hit the rear post and tore the roof off!
In the process of build one now, using a 110cuft oxygen cylinder.
Cylinder is hydro tested, bottom is cut off.
Base plate made, now working on the legs.
Will have it done in about another month.

Build a .270 winchester, a little less than the 30-06 a little more than the 25-06, either of them work fine on dear old mr deer, black bear and elk. The stories from Jack O'connor were enough to make it a piece of american history.

    well boys & girls,
I have chosen, and since there were several GOOD choices posted, I got tired of pulling my hair out, & decided to build 3
    The Calb. are
    From ghotie_thumper, the 270
    From Teamblue, A .260 rem
And just for kicks & because I don't have one,
A Completely custom .22 {don't think I'll use it on the game mentioned though.
The wood on each will be better than the rifles shown below,

    Danlittle,

Nobody mentioned a couple of GREAT! European cartridges that get used over the pond all the time. The 9.3 X 57 (Mauser case necked up to .366) or the 9.3 X 62 (.366) couple of really solid standards over there. It is a favorite "light rifle" in Africa too. It will fit in a standard '98 action but not so well in an M-48 (9.3X57 fits though). You'd have something unique with a shade more power than the 35 Whelen. -Just a thought.

P.S. The wood on those rifles is tremendous! Outstanding work Dan little.

We have the second amendment so that all the rest are secure....UNK>

On the edge of factory production would be two cartridges that would excell for use on bear/elk with the limits of a standard action: 338/06 and 35 Whelen. I'd prefer the 338/06 based on bullet availability, but either would be fine, though you won't find ammunition in all the stores that carry 30-06.

Danlittle, that is some wonderful looking wood work. Did you do it all, including inletting? Do you make these toys for others?
