Ford Mustang levels the playing field

looks like Ford woke up and gave the 2011 Mustang (base model) a new engine to compete with the Camaro...its a 3.7L V6 that makes 305HP...
I bet that the V8 on the GT will be replaced with something more powerful as well...since the existing V8 is a 310HP motor, not that far from the 2011 base...

They always seem to fall a bit flat against gm's horsepower numbers, and the streets have just about always been ruled by gm. What will happen now with the destruction of gm is anyones guess.

I heard rumor a few months back that a RWD version of the SHO's twin turbo is going to find it's way into the Mustang.

I've only rented a car a handful of times while in Europe but while my girlfriend and I were in Spain I decided that we needed a car and she talked me into renting (what I remember as) a 2006 GT and I have to say that the car was a lot of fun to drive. The V8 in the Mustang is nearly identical in size and output to the V8 in my BMW, but with the lower gearing it was much quicker to hustle it down the road. The speed limit in Spain is 75mph so top end really meant very little, but it easily went into triple digit speeds with little fanfare. I was not impressed enough to buy one of the cars, but it was fun to race around.

Yeah for $10-15k more than a Camaro and the SRT8 is STILL heavier than the Camaro

So I buy a camaro for $35k, add a supercharger for $5k and I have a 550 hp monster for still $5-10k less than your SRT8 family car

Damn, I was wondering when someone was going to pull the Shelby out of their *. Nice car though. About the same price as a fully loaded Challenger. I'd still take the Challenger!

I like the Challenger, but the GT500 is a hundred pounds less and makes 115 more HP.

When you get your imaginary SRT8 call me, we can meet and I'll smoke your $45000 family car with my 98 Z28 LS1 that I have $8000 in.

    pics_0214.JPG

That challenger is a pretty car though...there was a light blue one at the local dealership with the same wheels and styling and it looked pretty sweet.

You're thinking of the Charger, which I have (Daytona version - probably beat your Z28 [^][}:)] though anyway). The Challenger is a 2 door car. I test drove an SRT8 and you would be lucky to get in the back seat. The driver's seat doesn't even go forward - the only way into the back seat is through the passenger side. Oh and I'd put my money on the Challenger with a supercharger and 6 speed over your Z-28 with the same. [}:)]

It has nothing to do with that, but thanks for the vote of confidence.

Our cars are close enough "officially" that it would come down to the driver.

    2006 Dodge Charger R/T 5.6 14.20 (The Daytona is a little better - this is the regular R/T #s)

    1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 SS 5.2 13.60

If both were Supercharged - it would be an interesting 1320 feet!

Damn... a 3.7l V6 with 305 HP? Here everyone was praising the 4.0l V6 at 210 as being quite peppy for a V6. Which is, incidentally, what I have... time for an upgrade? [:p]

There are a ton of heads and cam lsx cars around here that run squarely in the 9's and 10's.

You aren't going to beat a gear head who did heads, cam, long tubes and tune in his garage with ANYTHING that is off the showroom floor [;)]

that's factory gears 3.23 in the camaro....

add 3.73:1 gears, longer duration rocker arms shift kit, off road x-pipe, SLP exhaust, FIPK kit, advance the timing and you've shaved 2 seconds off that 13.60

NAW!! I'm just funnin with ya. I haven't run it yet...I just put a new transmission in it and a new rear end so I have to break it in a bit before I thrash on it too much. There is a 1/8 mile track near by that I might run at the next T&T....

I've owned a couple foxbody cars that I've built up a bit and I can tell you this car is quite a bit quicker.
