Question about AK/AR

I remember hearing 35 years ago that the North Vietnamese could use .223 in AK's. I didn't believe it then and don't now. How could it generate enough pressure to do anything but rattle the bullet down the barrel at 30 fps? Can't see it cycling either.
Anybody else remember this?

Don't know what made me think of it 35 years later.

but we couldnt use their Chi com mortar rds in our tubes? because of the extra wires around the tail fins, but us mortars still worked in the Chinese mortar tube.
I never heard the rumor about the AK's using .223?
there are some AK's available chambered in .223, such as the SAR3.
I'm talking 1960's
