Blew an ear drum this afternoon and then ended...

up running out of gas near the top of a mountain with my truck on a 60+ degree incline...had to hike out and get diesel fuel and carry it back up the mountain.

This is the second time in less than a year that I've perforated this ear drum. The first time, I was seal launching in my kayak off a 15+' cliff...this time, I jumped off a cliff into the river and went too deep...hurts like a dickens right now.

It was getting near dark when we were hiking out to get fuel and we came across a fairly recent mountain lion kill...I was dreading hiking back up in the dark...everything worked out well though. We got my truck back running and were able to get home.

I literally have at least 1000 mosquito bites on me...they were so thick that every inch of my skin has multiple bites.

MERCY!! Will the ear drum heal? Take care with all those bites as well. How far did you have to go for fuel?

I would have wiped some of that Diesel Fuel on me hopeing it would repel them. Worth a shot man.

Keep a 5 or 10 gallon can of Diesel fuel strapped to your vehicle and locked in tight. Do not fill it all the way (4 gallons, or 8.5 gallons) for expanding room IMO... Change it out every 5 days (dump it in tank, put fresh in can).

Rule #1: Always refuel before any trip into the back country. No matter be it truck, or ATV, always refuel before heading out.

And on a diesel it takes a little longer to get that air out of the fuel lines before it will start.

How do I know this: Because I did not follow rule #1 on one occasion.

On my 15th birthday I was with some friends at one of the covered bridges and jumped off a rope swing into the river.....busted my ear drum when I hit the water. I had a friend take me to my mom. I thought I was going to DIE...it hurt so bad. While we were on our way home from the doctor we stopped by my Father's gun store and he came out to the car. He was telling me about the Bose floor speakers they got me for my birthday. I wasn't able to even sit up straight. I just remember him standing by the car and how excited he was when he was telling me what he got me. I was also as high as a kite because of the Tylenol 3 that the doctor gave me.

Damn, the water is still pretty chilly here in Okla. Gotta be COLD in Idaho. I bet you were torn between ear pain and pulling your nads back out when you hit the water. [:D]

When I was a Deputy I was on the Dive Team. We trained with the Coast Guard and we jumped out of the Helio.

A few small problems. You cannot argue with the pilot about how high you are, and the pilot was a little high in his hover, and San Diego bay was a little shallow in that spot.

I was first out, and dropped for three seconds before hitting the water. I didn't have my fins on, and sank knee deep in the mud about 12' under the water. It took about 30 seconds to free myself, and get back to the surface. And the pilot dropped all the others off much, much, closer to the water. Afterwards he came up to me and apologized.

wipe the bites with rubbing alcohol or take a bath and add 2 table spoons of bleach and soak. You will smell funn,y but you won't suffer too much.

So how did you go from running out of gas to jumping off of a cliff into water and rupturing your eardrum?

Actually, it happened in reverse order. We went to check out a short local stretch of whitewater and it was too low to run, so we opted to jump off this cliff into the river and on the way back home I decided to show my brother a place he had not seen before...and it's pretty much straight up to get to the top...and then straight back down. My gas gauge actually showed fuel in the tank, but on a 60+ degree incline headed down hill, it was sucking air.

Have you ever thought about the possibility that you may be a bit of a risk taker [?][?] Because it has occurred to me from time to time. [:0][:D]

If you had to climb UP with the fuel...why didn't you just coast Down to where it was ??

That would have proven to be a fatal mistake...it would have been very unwise to try to come down off that mountain with no power steering, brakes, and all 4 wheels locked in holding the truck back...this would hardly be considered a road...more of a goat trail. My brother had never been up anything remotely close to that before.

You know Danny, I was wondering if it was possible to be allergic to them! I was thinking to myself that I'd be toast if I were... I took some benadryl (sp?) when I got home.

Around here all the Mosquito traps have come up with no Mosquitoes infected with West Nile, so far.
