Buying a Gas Can

Slow_HandSlow_Hand Member Posts: 2,835
edited November 2006 in General Discussion
Does anyone have the website of supplier or store for a very high quality metal safety-type gasoline can, preferrably a 2 or 2 1/2 gallon model with a long flexible spout? A vehicle mount is not necessary.

I'm interested in buying one that will safely travel in the back of a vehicle on a very long drive in hot weather where there absolutely are NO gasoline stations or road services. No odors, no seepage, no spills, no risk of spontaneous combustion is my goal here.

Thanks!

We used to carry Justrite cans, they were some tough cans, pouring from them can be a little tricky though.

Military gas cans can often be found on the market..surplus stores generally have them. They are flat cans, and have a metal removable spout. Generally getting one with a good gasket, or making another gasket, will seal them up well.5 gallons is the typical size, however.

I have one of those. You can't ask for better or safer storage, but I can't pour from it without a lot of spillage. I like the old Jerry Cans with detachable spout.

Cheaper Than Dirt used to sell Jerry Cans. Don't know if they still do.

This is the one I have, but they didn't put the "roll cage" on mine.

It will last a life time. Mine's older than me, and still in "new" condition on all the moving/spring loaded parts.

Why do you want a metal one? All you get is more weight. The plastic ones are great - I've got 4 5 gallon ones for the generator and 4 2 1/2 gallon ones.

I can't speak for Slow Hand, but I can tell you why I need metal cans. I keep my gas in a building that used to be a corncrib. It hasn't been used for corn in a bunch of years, but the * squirrels can't get that into their little peanut brains. Believe it or not, squirrels will eat holes in plastic gas cans which are full of gas. Not to mention the metal doesn't break down and split as fast as plastic does. Also, I believe the metal cans are safer to carry in a vehicle.

According to Cheaper Than Dirt you can't buy a gas can via internet or mail order if you live in California, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey and New Hampshire. That applies to gas can spouts too. I wonder if there is a reason for that.

Ok.... I know it used to be "west by god" then was changed to "wild/wonderful" so I suppose they could have stolen it from the Ky county signs across the line. Politicans are capable of anything. It is kind of strange to enter a rural county and see a sign saying "now entering_______ county open for business".... nothing for miles but woodland and no electricity. [:D]

I just pump as much as possible down my gullet. That way, all I need is a funnel and I stick my finger in the back of my throat.

Normally I can haul around five or so gallons.
