The Washington Times is conservative and likes Republicans. I voted for Bush and am generally Republican but he and the mostly Republican congress have increased the size of the government more than anyone since Democratic president LBJ in 1964. It may well bankrupt our kids and grandkids.

    salzo:

    My error and you're right.

I have since read the article and agree with Mr. Thomas. The GOP has gone too far appeasing the people with handouts.

We need to get back to work.

Can anyone name a U.S.political party that has not embarrassed it's members at some point in time?
The day of voting a straight party line is gone, unless you are a hack or union stooge, no one party can give all the people of this country everything they want and to pretend otherwise is campaign drivel.

D's and R's, we're all in the same boat.
It's just that the steersman changes every four to eight years.

We have to remember that government IS big business no matter which party is in charge. If private investigations were "allowed" to dig into the way or government runs its business we would be looking at and organization that would put Enron to shame. That will never happen because the government does all of its own investigations. Like letting the fox guard the chicken coup. While our elected officials are accountable to us citizens it seems that the only actions we can take to hold them to that accountability happens after the damage is done. Even after the damage is done the public seems to have a short memory and little comes of it. I have no fault with the theoretical principle of our government, just the current people who run it. This is one of the reasons I support term limits. There is just too much oportunity to achieve individual power withing the government. The few who do really care have little power to achieve anything and are soon corrupted buy what is going on around them.

    If we're honest with ourselves...
Each change of leadership moves us to the left or right of center,
    seems the best system around.

No matter which side we are for (mostly [;)]),
they usually take us farther than we would like to go as a whole.

Then comes the corection of course.

Then, we swing (way) too far in the other direction.

Back and forth we go, right, left, right, left...
Like a new paddler in a canoe.

As long as our progress is down, (or up as the case may be), the river, we're making progress.

Seems the our first leaders really did know what they were doing!

Yeah but the problem is, as the article implies, is that the Republicans are not taking us Right of center, but left of center. If that is the way the Republicans want to take us, why not just vote democrat?

    Just my opinion of course,
but I still think Bush is better than any of the D's that are running.

To me anyway, the FAR left is where the D's are heading now a days, perhaps a move left for the "right" will take us closer to center?

    Truth is buddy, I'm confused!

This country is slowly drifting into socialism. WHY? Because the people of this country want to be taken care of from birth to death. The Republican Party is attempting to slow that drift to the left but even then will have only a minimal impact given that so many Americans lovingly embrace the concept of cradle to coffin care. I'll continue to vote Republican because they resist that leftward drift even if their resistance is somewhat ineffectual. Many of you view me as a closet Democrat...but I'll tell you the VAST majority of people with whom I have contact here in the state of Michigan view me as a radical right wing crazy who just doesn't get it. If an incredible number of people see me as a demented reactionary and I view myself as a moderate Conservative....then we are drifting left far faster and in far greater numbers than most of us can imagine.
