All I can do is relate the way it went for me. I put the problem off too long and seem to have a permanent muscle and sensation loss in my left hand. It was worse than the right and had been that way for 3-5 years longer.
I also have arthritis in my hands but didn't notice any difference in that after the surgery. I have other nerve problems in my hands relating to a malformed vertebrae so the CT release surgery didn't solve the whole problem. It did result in some improvement especially in allowing me to sleep better.
If this was happening to me, I'd chalk it up to Arthur. Did you take antiinflammatories and did that help?

My hand issues are caused by cervical spondylosis and other fun filled neck issues including a C6/C7 disc herniation.

Was told 15 years ago it required surgery to fix......

My wife's side of the family seems to have a lot fo Rheumatoid Arthritis. What you describe sounds familiar, except, you never mentioned your hands feeling hot. I could feel the heat from GrandMas hands, they actually radiated heat.
If your Docs go for it why not try a couple of weeks of steroids, Cortisone or some of the newer (safer) stuff.
I've got simple Arthritis in my hands, my joints are just worn down from work. A DMSO salve seems to help me. Some people DMSO helps, others nothing. Not likely to hurt much (few side affects), check with your Doc. The only side affect I've ever had from DMSO is a bad taste in my mouth.
Pretty much the same way I troubleshoot machinery, start with the simple stuff, give that a try and then progress on to the more radical solutions.
Germans are big on salves and ointments, much more so than U.S. Doctors.

What kind of work do you do.During the summer I fish commercialy. Hands get pretty trashed. lots of repetitive motion and cold water. There is a great chiropracter here that works wonders. Also I have found a product called Arnica Gel that really helps with the swelling. You can find it in some bigger helth food stores. Also for short periods large doses of vitamin B complex can help. Dont take for more than 5-6 weeks. what happens to us is that all the ligaments to the hand run thru a small space in the base of the hand. The carpel tunnel. They become inflamed and swell causing problems. You could have a different condition, but try a chiropracter, regular ostrepaths tend to be cut happy in my opinion. Good luck E

    thanks to all who responded.
    1. Yes I have tried Ibuprofin and alieve9 It works a little if I put booze with it then I can go 4 hours sleeping.

    2. Yes it feels like my hand is on fire or something like that or needles sticking in different places in my hand.

    3. Did you loose strength in your hand after CT surgery?

Had surgery on right hand for carpal tunnel bout 30 years ago...had therapy for approx 6 months after the surgery....and have been fine since...Lately I have noticed a bit of stiffness at times but nothing major....

Did you have therapy at all after the surgery?....I found the wax treatment was most helpful but again this was 30 years ago...warm wax, hand dipped in approx 10 times....keep wax on for about 1/2 hr or longer, then when taken off, could do whatever therapist wanted...without that wax treatment, hand was stiff and sore...

Check the the site...says swelling feeling is common in carpal tunnel....

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, or RSD, a chronic and incurable neurological disorder in which the autonomic nervous system - the system that transfers signals from the central nervous system to various organs throughout the body - malfunctions, causing nerves to misfire and send constant pain signals to the brain. RSD typically develops in response to physical trauma - a fall, fracture, infection, surgery or repetitive motion injury like carpal tunnel syndrome. Strangely, it often develops after a seemingly minor injury such as a stubbed toe or sprained ankle. Although there are many symptoms, pain disproportionate to the precipitating injury is common in all cases. In some patients, the condition is mild; in others it is severe and debilitating. In a few cases, no precipitating cause can be found.

    just a thought......

Hope your liver is up to the task. You sure don't want to add to your troubles.
Steroids don't cure anything, they just suppress your immune system. I'd follow the Doctors orders and avoid self medicating.

yeah, steroids will fix just about any inflammatory condition, at least short term.
problem is, can't use 'em long term, in most cases, w/o risking serious side effects.
