if I mulch my asparagus box to help keep weeds down, will the new crowns grow through the mulch?

Yep, keep them covered and you will get white asparagus, the most delicate kind.
It's asparagus festival time in Germany and much of Europe.
are they strong enough to emerge from the mulch on their own?
Sorry- I am the only guy on the planet earth that considers asparagus a vial weed.[:D]
No, you are not! They have the same taste as a piece of rebar....just my opinion, of course.

Yes. Your daffodils had no problems, right? Same thing.

I thought they used hay to keep them white.

Hay will work, you need to pile it on though. So will a big box. The object is to keep all sun off of them.
And that is a very good notion that you have there as well. [^]
Thats what we did last weekend.[V]
Oh well! There's always next decade!
What they WONT survive is the yard guy spraying them with extended control roundup as the ferns are sprouting early in year two.

damn man,..my condolences[V] I love asparagus. We planted crowns last year, and this year some of the stalks are as thick as a dime[:p] we are looking to go in with another 20+ crowns this year.
Yes, asparagus will grow through leaf or grass mulch.

We do love the fresh asparagus[:p]

I've watched them do it around here, they plant year old plants in rows and keep piling loose dirt on top. You see them growing in raised rows, the mounds grow as the plants grow. The white is the stalk trying to get to the top of the soil. They seem to favor sandy soil, at least most of the plots I've seen seemed sandy. They tend to plant on flood plains that drain well. Pretty much the same soil that works for Pumpkins. Getting the white ones seems pretty labor intensive, you see people out in the fields continuously.
I'm not a big fan of Asparagus, all I really know is what I've observed. I sit at the edge of the Asparagus field and wait for the field workers to flush a Hare or Rabbit.[:D]
Why on earth would you intentionally plant that stuff?[xx(] Baiting pigs?[}:)]
Come on Dale,..you don't like some fresh grilled asparagus?? you need to travel over to the right coast and let me show ya sumthin[:p]
Yes it will eventually grow thru the mulch as long as the mulch isn't real deep. Deep mulch gets real hot and kills everything under it.

Plus infinity!!!!!!!!
When I was a kid I would "accidentally" mow over the asparagus, oops[:0]
the top rack of the grill is for asparagus, corn, and onions....
It grows wild out here. I pickle it with garlic and California red peppers.
Clouder..
It will push through the piles left behind a ditch scraper so mulch will present little problem.

That sounds awesome! I steam it over a shallow frying pan with some herbs in the water.... also, will grille it.... or in an aluminum foil pouch with balsamic vinagrette....

anytime you wanna mail me a few bundles,..it won't hurt my feelins[;)][:D]
So what if your 'pee' smells a little weird for awhile.
I like balsamic vinegar, or lemon juice and coarse ground pepper on mine.[:p]
