Trail of blood leads police to suspect in Centreville shooting

Centreville -- A man in his 30s and a 23-year-old who police believe shot him were both taken to a St. Louis hospital Sunday following a bizarre turn of events.

The unnamed man in his 30s was shot multiple times about 5 p.m. in the 5600 block of Church Road. He drove himself to a hospital. The shooter was found inside a residence next door to where the shooting occurred.

A trail of blood at the original crime scene led police to the residence where the shooter was holed up.

Police, with the help of a family member, were able to talk the suspect, who was bleeding profusely from a large laceration, out of the home. He was also taken to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of his wounds.

His condition was serious, but stable, police said.

Centreville Police Capt. Tony Tomlinson said the victim, though he was shot multiple times, does not appear to have life-threatening wounds. The shooter, however appears to have a very deep cut, that police believe he suffered prior to the shooting.

"We believe the shooter had a physical altercation with a female relative of the person he shot. But we are still conducting an investigation," Tomlinson said.

Tomlinson described the series of events this way:

Police were called to the 5600 block of Church Road to investigate a call that reported shots fired.

Just as police officers were arriving to the scene, a call came in reporting that someone with multiple gunshot wounds was at Touchette Regional Hospital.

He had been shot multiple times and had driven himself to the hospital.

"At the scene, we saw a lot of blood. We followed the trail of blood to the house next door, waited for backup to arrive, then surrounded the house," Tomlinson said.

A window at the home was open, Tomlinson said. "Police looked inside and could see a lot of blood and felt someone had to be in there. As we moved to the rear of the house, a window suddenly popped open and we knew for a fact that he was inside," Tomlinson said.

"We tried negotiating with him to come out. But, it wasn't until a relative, whom he had called, came and started talking to him, along with police, that he surrendered," Tomlinson said.

That unnamed individual was taken to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of his injuries, Tomlinson said.

The suspected shooter is a 23-year-old Centreville man. The victim is from East St. Louis and is believed to be in his early 30's, Tomlinson said.

Police recovered the weapon that they believe was used in the shooting, he said
