The Flag pole thread reminded me of this one

A group of managers were given the assignment to measure the height of a flagpole. So they go out to the flagpole with ladders and tape measures, and they're falling off the ladders, dropping the tape measures - the whole thing is just a mess.
An engineer comes along and sees what they're trying to do, walks over, pulls the flagpole out of the ground, lays it flat, measures it from end to end, gives the measurement to one of the managers and walks away.
After the engineer has gone, one manager turns to another and laughs. "Isn't that just like an engineer, we're looking for the height and he gives us the length."

An instructor at the War College gave his class a problem of erecting a flag pole. He told them the materials available, soil condition, terrain, weather and wind direction, distribution of forces and other relevant and irrelevant information. The class had an hour to describe how they would accomplish erecting a flag pole. Most of the class broke out their slide rules and started calculating and writing.

I heard a very similar story from a retired USMC Captain. He told it first person. He was in engineer school and they received the same problem. They had the afternoon to finish it. One person got up after 30 seconds and turned in his paper. Of course he was the only one to pass the assignment.
