States Rights

It has been very interesting to see the newly discovered Abiding Respect for States Rights coming from our principled friends on the Left.

I had an online discussion with one of our local leftists yesterday who was incensed that Trump was violating "States Rights" by working against sanctuary cities.

Now on the radio, I just heard the City Attorney of San Francisco say he was suing the federal government, and one of his peeves was the violation of "States Rights".

Hand that man a Confederate Flag and welcome him to the Right Side of History! [:D][:D][8D]

Trump is pulling federal funding from sanctuary cities. How is that a violation of state's rights?

It's the same violation as pulling funding from states when the speed limit wasn't reduced to 55. ie: None, if done within the law.

The problem is, the federal government has the financial power to implement this type of manipulation. But few realize that, and even fewer are willing to address it. The balance of power between local, county, state, and federal government level have long been tilted.

    Bingo! We have a winner!

Also the same as witholding fed education money if you don't do "No Child Left Behind" and "Common Core".

    Ahh those federal purse strings.

The scumbag (D) mayor of Cincinnati Ohio declared that cesspool of crime and corruption a sanctuary city.

I hope they go bust and have to come begging for money to keep the lights on.

Seems like if they claim their rights violated, aren't sanctuary cities violating my rights? By aiding and abetting criminals and violating constitutional law, they are infringing on my rights to a sovereign nation.

The 16th Amendment states that Congress can spend monies collected from income taxes in any manner they see fit. This is obviously not a States' Rights issue.

Funny how the both the left and the right cite the holy grail of States' Rights when it serves them.

I agree on the 16th, Don. But I am trying to recall the last time I heard someone on the left express support for states rights.

I've also heard SR quoted as a reason to reject a federal requirement for universal CCW reciprocity/recognition. While we all want the final result, some want it only if it is done by 50 different state legislatures and not coerced by a federal law.

A valid point, Dads. I will ponder this evening, but it is no surprise a collectivist mentality would rarely find a time when such a claim would be considered necessary.

They are doing it now, however.

It's not. I think the OP was amazed to see the Dems actually mention states rights, they never have before.

State's Rights started eroding and fading away when these United States became THE United States. The Constitution itself isn't the same document we started with. In my opinion most of the amendments to the Constitution after the first ten were mistakes.

The Senate was originally intended to be the States representatives in the Federal Government and was elected by the legislatures of the States. The House of Representatives was the People's representatives and were elected by the people. In 1913 we discovered we are smarter than the founders and changed all that.

The erosion has progressed until now we send our money to the Federal Government and they return it as they see fit to cover our expenses. Time was we sent money to the Fed to cover their expenses. You don't have to be Thomas Jefferson to know the power stays with the money.

An argument can be made that eleven states surrendered their "State's Rights" at the point of a bayonet, but for the most part it was voluntary by everybody concerned.

We are about to make another HUGE mistake when we amend the Constitution to elect the President of the United States by popular vote.

The people who make these decisions may or may not have read the Constitution of the United States, but they damn sure don't understand it.
The road to hell is paved with COMPROMISE.

What happened with states right and the Helmet law. Seems there are a bunch that do not require it. The Fed has not been able to make them change it.

I would place marijuana, helmet laws, etc. more on the order of individual liberties as compared to States Rights. The power of the state to enforce helmet laws or to enforce prohibitions upon the sale and use of drugs is not being infringed.

    Including health care ?

If you reference is to the 16th Amendment, the answer is obviously yes.

    Why do you ask?
