A woman tweeting as Storm Durham say she was terminated from her job as a social worker simply for having a carry permit. She was escorted from the building by three police officers because she was considered "a safety risk to the building". There was no allegation that she was carrying to work or on the job.

If true, this is clearly a case of unlawful discrimination. A lawsuit will follow for sure, however, Virginia is a right-to-work state, which may be problematic for her case.

I’ll reserve comment until I hear the other side.

I'm sure there has to be more to the story.

There is nothing in the Roanoke Times about it yet. I suspect that there is ALOT more to this story. "serving as a damn good social worker"...I know that isn't true because Social Services is useless.

Apparently not THAT useless, they managed to remove a "threat" from their building; now all they have to do is remove the progliblefty that squealed.

Probably a whole lot more to the story. The Virginia government is very leery of wrongful termination lawsuits. You've got to really foul up and foul up for a long time to get canned. OTOH, there are some things that get you canned right away, but they're usually so bad any damn fool would know better.

VA DMV is paying a former co-worker a $460,000 judgement for wrongful termination. They should have had their ducks in a row before they canned her.

if you go to her FB page and scroll through the comments, it does appear that there is more to the story.

Someone said her boyfriend brought a gun into her workplace and it was discovered.

Is that necessarily true? No...but it makes more sense than the story being presented.

She may not have had a firearm on her person, but if she left it in her car and mitted that it was in her car in the parking lot on their premise, she hasn't got a leg to stand on

A lot of places won't let you even have it on the premises including in your locked car

I know my son has to park his pick up across the street from the post office where he works if he has a firearm in it, because he can get fired for having it on the premise.

I know a fellow who got canned from a teaching job for bringing a handgun to school and leaving it and several boxes of ammo in his car on the passenger seat. The gun and ammo were not in a box or covered, just out in plain view. The car was locked but in the school parking lot.

I also know a woman who got a DUI, was told by the magistrate or judge or whomever that she needed to tell her principal right away, and did not, and she was strongly urged to retire immediately. She also had a long history of absences and late arrivals. She was told retire or be fired, and decided to retire.

I have seen a couple ineffective / it's just not working out folks given a strong sort of arm twisting to get them out the door. In both cases it's sort of a brutal thing. The person is sort of ambushed by HR and told they can either sign a paper resigning and accept not working for the school system for 5 years and getting a neutral recommendation, or they can fight and be fired and permanently blackballed and get a negative recommendation. They are told they have to sign right then, that they can't think about it. In both cases, though, they really had it coming.

posted on local social media, don't know if it is real the letter is is accurate.....if she was a probationary employee then they don't have to have a reason to let her go, though they have cited several.
