My brother Is my neighbor the in the Blue Ridge Mountains, he lives a half mile away. He has planted 14 chestnut trees and this year is a big harvest, there are thousands of nuts. Two days ago a bear showed up to help with the harvest. Pic taken with game cam.
The low branches of this tree are 7 feet off the ground.

Don't step on them chestnut hulls barefooted.
My dad was born in 1899. Before the chestnut blight, he said walking in the woods was like walking on marbles. In the Fall, they would turn the hogs out to fatten up on chestnuts.
We planted 13 acres of chestnuts five years ago. We started harvesting three years ago but this year we have harvested 2200 pounds so far. We planted another 120 acres of chestnuts this year. There is a growing market for chestnuts with them bring around four dollars a pound. Don
Do you need @susie to send her 85 yr old Aunt to take care of that bear?
Good Lord dcon12. 2,200 pounds, and 120 new acres! Where are you? What kind of chestnuts? We plant Dunstan Chestnuts.
I am in Albany, Ga. and we have planted a lot of UGA varieties. We are looking to achieve a ton to two ton per acre when the trees mature. Don
Wow.
There must be as much money in chestnuts as pecans.
That's nuts
If we can figure out a economical way to harvest them. Don
Don, how old are new trees when they start bearing?
We had some start at two years old. Don
That is very cool! My mother in law had one in her yard for several years. It was huge.
The original range of the American chestnut was North Carolina and points north. Just made it in to north Georgia. In 1800 there wasn't a chestnut tree growing within 200 miles of Albany Georgia. I guess Chinese chestnuts can stand warmer weather.
Don didn't you know my buddy from Milledgeville, Jerry "The Crowman" Tomlin.
Yes, he used to hunt crows here. I have his vhs tapes around here somewhere. Don
Here's a few nuts I picked up at my brother's place yesterday. He has thousands of nuts this year. These Dunstan Chestnuts don't like cold weather. Last year we had a late frost and it wacked the entire crop. We didn't get a single nut last year.
How do you harvest that many?
I like my, chestnuts roasting by an open fire. Jack frost nipping at my nose,,,
Love me some chestnuts. Unboiled, talk about crop dusting.
We had pet ground hog. He loved them to. They had the same effect on him.
