Jim Deere nailed it. Type of fire mission for mortars/ artillery. River crossing point we know gets used at night, but we have no observers. At irregular intervals, lob a coupla 3 rounds of HE in there, just to keep them honest.

H&l are the sizing dies used for cast boolits. Lyman makes and sells H&l dies for their 450 sizer/luber tool.. RCBS also makes and sells them for their Lub a Matic sizer luber tool

    Hillary and Idiots.

    :lol::lol:
The government has no rights. Only the people have rights which empowers the government.
We have enough gun laws, what we need is IDIOT control.

If you are referring to artillery fire it means Harassment and Interdiction fire.

You pick a place where the enemy is thought to be and fire mortar or artillery rounds at it usually unobserved to harass and maybe kill the enemy. It is not done very much anymore but was very popular in VN.

Left over names from the old Ideal catalog.
You could order a "H-89xxxx" part or a "I-76xxx part"
"H&I" dies named from the old Ideal catalog. The body is part "H" and the cylindrical stem is part "I".

I can't believe they misspelled "Pork and Beans!"

If you want to see how sizing was done a long time ago, here is a rebuild of a Ideal sizer.
On the 2nd page "Instructions to use" picture the last paragraph notes the "H" and "I" sizer pieces.
Those 2 pieces are what you changed for different sizes.

Great babun... ''H'' is simply the boolit sizing die and ''l'' is the punch that pushes the boolit thru the sizer... H and l were simply
lettered designations of parts for a LYMAN 45 luber/sizer... Been casting since the 70s and never knew what H&l stood for..
Never too old to learn .. Thanks.

    You are welcome.
I must have shot about 27 gagzillion 148gr wadcutters thru my S&W52 midrange gun and about 58 megazillion 185gr semi-wadcutters thru my Colt goldcup .45.

But I never got into casting my own.
Don't know why??? Maybe it was too easy just to buy them by the 1000"s and load them.
Watched, help, others smelt lead for bullets, just not me.
    :o

Glad I wasn't the only dumb one here. I've been casting since the early 80's and never paid attention to it.

Now that was interesting. I doubt I will ever call in a fire mission...but who knows? ;)
