Maybe? Depending on what you want to do. If you want to incapacitate use human pepper spray or mace. If you just want to deter use bear spray.

I always thought bear spray would have a higher concentration of the active ingredient oleoresin capsicum then pepper spray intended for humans. But that's not actually so.

Bear spray is similar to pepper spray but is not the same thing. Though they both contain the same active ingredient ? oleoresin capsicum, bear spray contains a much lower concentration.

A typical pepper spray used for self defense will have an oleoresin capsicum (OC) concentration of about 10% or higher. A typical bear spray has a oleoresin concentration of about 1 ? 2 %.

The goal of using bear spray is to scare off an attacking bear, not cause it to become incapacitated and incur serious pain. That?s why bear spray only requires a small amount of active chemical ? just enough to irritate the bear and cause it to back off.

Not the same, OC concentration is higher in OC spray over bear spray.

With bear spray you have sound, a large colored cloud and an "offensive" amount of capsicum around 2-3%. It's suppose to drive a bear away. Pepper spray used by professional law enforcement is about 10 x's higher level of capsicum and intended to subdue, stop them in their tracks. Not exactly what you want a bear to do, "stick around." ;)

That explains it very well. Thank you.

Some Brown Bears are intrigued by, even attracted to, pepper spray.

Hikers, Forest Service employees, and others have shot a dose of pepper spray (to test function) on a bush or stump before heading out for the day. Only to find upon their return, the bush or stump was trashed by a wandering Brownie.

That is why I always advise tourist to spray their tent before bedtime.

I can't believe they misspelled "Pork and Beans!"
