Tactical Lights

I am about to purchase a Mossberg 500/590 for the ever popular "home protection". I would like to fit this weapon with a tactical light and a presure switch on the forearm pistol grip. My question is this: What is the most powerful tac-light to use for this scenario. I want it to be as bright as possible so that it effectively impairs the vision of any BGs that may be in my house. Just on preliminary research, I have found the SureFire M2 Centurion at 120 lumens but I'm not sure it can be mounted or presure switch activated. Anybody have any experience with bright tactical lights? Thanks in advance!

Surefire makes replacement forends that have the light and switch built in. No wires. Neat installation, but not cheap. I know they make them for the Remington, because we have some at the PD, but unknown about the Mossberg.

I use the Q-beam cordless/ rechargeable 1 million candlepower light sold at WalMart for the purpose of "impairing" the BG's vision. Not built-in to the weapon, but it sure makes target identification easy. You can operate the light with the support hand as needed, then drop it ( attached to a lanyard, of course ) if you need to operate the scattergun.

I got a Mossberg 500 myself a short while ago, also a Ruger PC9. I considered a tactical illuminator for either or both, but I decided against, despite my lack of experience in the subject. My reasoning is that my night vision is still excellent (must be all the carrots) and, in analogy with a submarine not wanting to go "active" with its sonar, I wouldn't want to advertise my location or give the BG a point to grab at if he is trying to strip me of my weapon. Both weapons are either dark gray or black and so would be very difficult to see at night otherwise.I can understand that a law enforcement officer might be in a different situation, not knowing my house or its occupants as well as I do.Any expert opinions out there, especially "been there, done that"?

Nope, ain't done it, but now you have me thinking about maybe a good light for the stakeout that I have. Not quite as heavy or long as the 500, so adding a few pounds in light and batteries shouldn't hurt. Keep us informed on what light you decide to use.

Think long and hard about why you want a light on a weapon and what you will use it for.The only 'place' I need to defend is my home and I know that space very very well. I don't need a light to move around and identify objects. If I need to 'disable' somebody in a defensive situation they will be permanantly disabled. If I need to 'identify' my target it will be with something other than placing a nice target on my weapon for them to shoot at.Maybe police officers need a weapon mounted light to 'search' and 'identify' their targets, I DON'T.I had a bit of 'training' by somebody who had an idea what they were doing... using a light and a pistol together to search an area and fire on a target in total darkness. It sure aint easy, I'll tell you that!Of course, it wasn't easy waiting till midnight so we could have that range to ourselves for 4 hours straight.... gRRRrrr.

O.K. You guys have me convinced. A tack light is a bad idea. The only light any bad guy will see in my house is a muzzle flash and then "the bright light of God" calling them home! But those tactical lights look sooo COOL on a home defense shotgun!Oh well. Better to live long than to look cool!

"...look so COOL." Ain't it the truth? Are not most gun gimmicks bought for how they look rather than how they perform or the benefit they provide? The ultimate gun gimmick to me is a laser sight. I played with one a while and found that I could get a sight picture and a good shot off in less time than it took to find that red dot on the target. Maybe I have too many years of traditional pistol shooting under my belt.
