I see there are some ffl holders out there, can any of you fellas give me some advise on getting one? I have been interested in getting a license for awhile now but I can never get a straight answer from the dealers around here. sorta like a trade secret! I saw FFL kits on ebay for sale , should I go that route or is that a scam?. I want to run a small business from my home as a hobby. I know it's expensive but aint they all?
when all else fails........................

Before you apply, make sure there are no zoning restrictions or even deed restrictions about having a business in your home. If there are, you will not qualify.Had I stayed where I was 7 years ago, I would have lost my license when the BATF cracked down on small dealers. We moved to an unincorporated area with no restrictions and I moved my business to a small shop on my property but separate from my home, so I was able to keep mine. A friend of mine lost his over zoning, because he is residential, even though right across the street is retail.Besides that, you will keep records, and you will run it as a business and keep track of all profits and expenses. You will have to show a profit at least part of the time, or the IRS will declare your business a hobby. You will have to get a state and local tax permit and collect taxes. The license costs $200 for three years, and you have to be photographed and fingerprinted. Renewals are $90 for three years. You have to list hours of operation on your application. You are subject to inspection by the BATF during those hours, and all your guns and records are subject to inspection. Your records must be accurate or you can be fined or lose the license. You use the word, "hobby." You cannot treat it as a hobby if licensed. You are a businessman. If you want a hobby license, consider a Type 03, Curio and Relic Collector license. It will enable you to buy lots of older and surplus firearms direct from distributors for your personal collection. There is no secret to getting the FFL. All the forms you need are available from your local BATF office. You don't need a kit. You have probably been discouraged from applying by dealers because they know what a hassle it is.
