Is there any way of knowing if a seller is bidding on their own auction.I have been watching a certain auction and the reserve was not met.Now the auction is relisted with no reserve, but the first bid comes in which puts it at the old reserve price. It could be coincidence but it is hard to tell.

Possible to bid on one's own auction? Probably, from a different computer using a different user profile. More likely, a seller MIGHT get a buddy to artificially inflate the bidding.Either way, if Admin gets wind of it, they would probably not be using GB anymore.

A few years ago when Ebay allowed gun auctions, I noticed that the seller was also a bidder. Same name. I asked him how come and he referred me to some rule somewhere on Ebay, which I went to, and sure enough it allowed a seller to bid on his own auction. This type bidding was allowed under certain circumstances .

SaxonPig: Poppycock. You comments are completely without merit. Our software specifically prohibits any seller from bidding on his own auction and any seller caught shill bidding will be terminated. However, I do have a penchant for terminating those who attempt to defame us.[This message has been edited by admin (edited 11-22-2001).][This message has been edited by nunn (edited 11-23-2001).]

Well, in three years on five sites I've been a party to two shill bids. In one case, I had listed several items in a hurry & because of circumstances didn't notice until I had a bid that the decimal was in the wrong place. In the other a buddy was acting as a favor to a relative and only after there was a bid on his item did the relative inform him that there was a minimum acceptable offer. Flame all you want, but in neither case was the intent to defraud or harm, and both items sold at least two steps over the shill bid, so the asking prices were definitely acceptable to the public.

Well now, then there is the other possibility isnt there. I have purposely bid on an item for what it is worth, even though there was no reserve, and did so just to keep from screwing around with bidders, and to get things moving. In one instance no one was bidding on this gun, which was a real deal, so I bid just below the reserve price, cause I didnt want it, but thought the poor guy should be able to sell it, if someone would just get things going. Sometimes people wont bid on something if they dont have any competition, or think that others dont think its worth the reserve. You just dont know really, you take your chances, like with anything that has room for fraud.

Admin, you could be from Texas, as that is a very common expression here. Properly pronounced, it has at least three, sometimes four, syllables.
