we got these little snakes around here...neat snake ...NON poisonous when one is disturbed he will puff and hiss and carry on...BUT..if that doesn't work it will writhe around and exude slime and blood out of his mouth like injured and roll over on his back and play dead...now if you roll him back over on his belly he will roll back upside down because that's what a dead snake does....

Actually that is wrong. Hognose snakes are ophistoglyphs, a fancy way of saying they have fangs in the back of the mouth. The fangs are grooved like a cobras fangs and the venom is deadly to toads, their favorite prey. Bites to humans are rare, but have occurred and cause classic symptoms of hemolytic venom, like the bite of a copperhead. Here is a tip, don't handle hognose snakes after handling toads.

He Dog, I saw a picture online of a hognose snake eating a mouse. Presumably the mouse was dead before it was presented the snake.

I was under the impression that the hognose snake's diet was 100% toads.

I also saw some pictures of some genetic messing around for custom colors, demanding high dollars. Yuck! [xx(]

I have handled a few hognose snakes, before I learned that they are mildly venomous. Never had one try to bite. Some would strike, but they would either strike short or close their mouths just prior to contact.

The hognose is about my favorite snake; he's the clown prince of the reptile world. Miles of fun to watch them do their thing.
