Off-duty officer shoots and kills one man, injures another in carjacking attempt ASSOCIATED PRESS January 30, 2002 PICO RIVERA - An off-duty police officer shot and killed one man and wounded another as the two assailants attempted to steal his pickup from a gas station, authorities said. The Baldwin Park police officer was confronted by two would-be carjackers about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at a gas station in Pico Rivera, about 10 miles east of Los Angeles. The officer, who wasn't immediately identified, grabbed his handgun and shot both men multiple times, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Joe Efflandt. One man was dead and the other was taken to County-USC Medical Center. The officer was not injured. Consider this: This shooter is an off-duty officer, but he was not acting as a law enforcement officer. In this instance, this man was an armed citizen, defending himself. Strong argument for citizen carry.
