Broke my heart

Went to the gun show in Harrisburg today. Saw a Barrett .50 semi-auto complete with scope for $6,950. By the time I'd added the 4% Visa fee the and the tax it came to $7,400. Mrs Mudge almost gave me a heart attack when she said, "If you really want it, get it."[:O]
I know it was a terrific price but I just couldn't justify pullin' the ol' plastic.
Mudge the devastated [:(]
I can't come to work today. The voices said, STAY HOME AND CLEAN THE GUNS!<BR>

Seller said it was modernized in 1950 and never shot.
That being said, it was probably a $10 rifle in 1950, still sad though.
German laminates, walnut, even some wartime oak if you need. They are perfect. No metal of course, but the wood is museum quality. He doesn't mark or put acceptance marks on them. French, Russian, Austrian, whatever.
I had a Warsaw Mauser early in my collecting days. They were well made. If you could have gotten it cheap, a stock could be procured.
It was a cottage industry to sporterize a military rifle in the 50's and 60's. I'm happy now to find one with undamaged metal.
The gunsmith doing the work did a nice job, but he destroyed a valuable historical military relic. He kept the BOLT as it was because it was numbered to the gun, necessitating the installation of very tall scope rings.
He even re-barreled the rifle, so the only original parts kept were the action, bolt assembly, and magazine assembly.
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! If you were going to do that much work to make a "sporter," you could have started with a rifle that Bubba had already gotten hold of.
I had gone without a subscription to a slick-paper gun rag for a long time, but G&A offered a heck of a deal, so I subscribed. I found it to still be a typical slick-paper advertisement for Ruger and Remington.
My subscription is expiring, and I am not going to renew.
