Payment methods for personal sales of firearms

Hi folks, I have been away from GunBroker for about 7 years but am currently wanting to liquidate some or all of my collection. What is the preferred method of payment these days for a personal (non-merchant) firearm sale? Still postal money order?

Thanks!

That seems to be pretty common.
Be sure and post up a link to your auctions when you get 'em up and runnin'!

Postal money order, certified (cashiers) check, some folks take personal checks and do not ship until the check clears. There is some risk with any method, even Postal money orders have been faked these days, but in most cases you will be fine.

Be sure that you can recognize the current PMOs. The watermark portrait & the interrupted hologram stripe are just about impossible to forge. The old style PMOs are currently being forged by the London branch of the Nigerian internet cafe hustlers, & they look good to the untrained eye.

When I sell, I also accept bank checks (on major banks).

I won't accept anything on a MoneyGram bank check or MO.

One of the local guys that sold some of his items would take the postal money orders down to the large downtown postal facility and cash them before he shipped the gun. He had heard there were a lot of counterfeit money orders and wanted to verify payment before shipping the items out. I haven't had a "fake" anything in all my years...no certified checks or bad money orders, so I don't know if this is worth worrying over that much.

Same here. The few things I've sold, I'll take anything except Credit cards or PP.

Ditto what everyone else has said not to mention if the buyer has even a few feedbacks on here he's probably legit.

We even ship out guns on personal checks without waiting. 0 problems other than the occasional guy looking at his credit card statement 5 months down the road and "I've never even been to North Dakota"ing us to his credit card company. Even those are cleared up pretty much instantly when we call the person.

If you accept certified/cashier's checks may sure to call the bank and verify it is legit, there are alot of forged cashier's checks too.

I like personal checks. If it gets lost in the mail, all the buyer has to do is issue another. That doesn't work so well with a money order, especially the grocery store variety.

I have been selling on GunBroker since GunBroker was brand new, around 1998-99. In all that time, I have gotten exactly TWO bad checks. Both checks came from FFL dealers to buy firearms. In both cases, the dealers made the checks good very quickly.
