Preemptive Strikes!!!!

Soooooooo.... I've been in the military for a while, but the whole preemptive strike option seems to have faded away after President Ronald Reagan soundly ended the Cold War.

Yet, it appears that policy is alive an well here at GB, as we now accept a thread lock in "anticipation" of some terse words. [:D][:D][:D]

For the life of me, I can't quite figure out why this place is hemorrhaging members. [;)]

I actually think that Zulu has a pretty good sense for threads that are going to head south and he locks them before too much damage is done. Hemorrhaging members? We used to get quite a few threads from guys making their swan song and annoucing to all of us how fed up they were and why they are departing but I can't recall seeing one of those threads here in quite a while. If people are leaving then they are being quiet about it (which is a refreshing change). Currrently we have 1388 members waiting for approval and since I have become an administrator I have been watching the daily average numbers of "forum applicants". Right now we seem to average around 200 per day looking to join so if we lose one member then there are 100 more waiting in the wings.

    Must be "preemptive lock" then!

I don't agree with that kinda moderation. How about being a "moderator" and moderating? Warn, tell people not to let it get outta hand then come down only on those who do.

This kinda moderation is what many complain about in actions by our government.

The wings are about as far as they get Mark. Either they get run off or just choose NOT to post a thread. Count the number of people that do post on here and you will find theres just a hand full of regulars.

That does not change the fact that Zulu does the exact things that he locks threads for.

    Thank you, Mark.

As for the rest of you, it has been Nunn's policy for a very long time to do a preemptive lock on a thread that is going to head south.

I went out of my way many times, both on and off the forum, to try to help Joe with technical problems, and help him fit in on the forum, and I was repaid in insults. It was CaptFun who put the brakes on Joe's forum useage.

    Zulu (Mark):

You seem like a good guy, no offense meant- I was just busting your balls a little. [:D]

I do think many of the "Old Dawgs" have either left, or stopped posting here, and I sure wish they'd stop back in and post a bit more frequently. We used to have some very spirited debates here on GB, and even though there were a few bruises now and again, those were some interesting times and I think many here miss 'em.

I guess times change, and we may never see the return of the GunBroker SugarBear-RemoteGirl Era..... but that doesn't mean a man can't dream! [;)]

SugarBear was dead before I joined, so I completely missed out on that one. However, I do remember RemoteGirl, and I still have the classic RemoteGirl picture on my Photobucket account.

I do miss the days when things were more relaxed, but I also recognize that I have a job to maintain the standards that the Admins say we have to enforce.

I argued against banning remote girl but that policy was not made at (my then) moderator level. SugarBear was locked by Capt Fun with very specific instrucitons that it never be unlocked again and whoever would dare to put it back up on the boards (mod or admin) is OUT of the forum.

Capt. Fun is not a man to fool with.

So far as I know every thread that is locked here in GD is looked over by one of the admins. We don't do that over in Ask The Experts because every thread is automatically locked after ten responces but I read over virtually every single word written in the forum so I have a pretty good idea what is going on. I have on occassion seen Nunn and Capt, Fun come back and unlock a thread that a moderator has locked, but this does not happen often. Capt Fun runs the show while admins set up the guidelines and moderators enforce the rules based on what they beleive falls into line with the policies as they understand them. We used to have a fellow here who would lock any thread with a topic that he did not want to discuss like Why aren't guns shipped to buyers in CA? Doing that is bad moderating and so far as I can see this no longer happens. There are however a very few subjects which Capt Fun has made very clear he does not want discussed here and they are locked on sight.

Once again; I think that Zulu does a very good job as a moderator and handles things as he feels he has been instructed to do so. Issues with individual moderators in GD need to go to Nunn or in the case of Ask The Experts to me, or you can go right to the top and say your piece to Capt Fun....Heaven help you!

So, the age ole "do as I say not as I do"... Nothing against you mark, but this really is the pot and kettle adage. Also why should we be afraid, or whatever you are insinuating, to email capt a problem/concern with the people on this site? I only ask because in my first several years on this forum nobody knew capt (or his existence) and now we hide behind him. Yes all the mods and admin do a great job to keep this place running. Maybe this is just a rant of years and years of thoughts and .......

The treads that get locked seem to be the ones of most interest to people. They usually have the most views and posts. I don't understand locking a thread because someone MAY say something inappropriate. If someone does something wrong, punish that person. If a gun owner commits a violation punish that person, not all gun owners.

In my time here, there has always been one controversial mod.

First, it was Saxon Pig. Some folks did not like the way he handled things. I had no problem. He was, at least, mature and consistent.

Then, ECC. He was good for a while, then lost his ever-loving mind. Who knows!?

Now.....Zulu. The example posted above.....How do you reconcile being a moderator then making a post like that? I roll my eyes or shake my head and move on, remembering that this is just the internet.

Not picking on Jake. Just calling this one as I see it.

    Y'all have a nice day.

Zulu7 was right to lock the "big bang" thread. He usually exercise tolerance, patience and good judgment. That thread was of a religious nature, and we don't allow that.
