I happened to look out my back window and saw the blacksnake. I went to look closer and he was enjoying a nice meal of a baby copperhead.

One good reason to leave the blacksnakes be.[:D]

(sorry the pics arn't too good, I took them with my camera phone)

Are rat snakes are deep chocolate brown, looking black in shadow.
No white markings on ours. I leave em' alone and welcome them
    to my garden. Mouse

Looked in my reptile books, and the young ones have the white
coloration. Your picture is of a King snake. Rather had lots of them, and no copperheads!

There are plenty of copperheads around these parts.

That was the first one I have seen near my house in 2 years though. I'm sure with that blackie around there wont be many around here though.

When we lived in Connecticut, me and the kids came upon a Black Racer in the Talcott Notch Resevoir system. Wow! It jumped up about 2 feet and seemed to scram off without getting near the ground!

Couple of years later we had a place in Avon, and a big water snake would catch trout from my stocked pond....what a place that was. It was on Avon Mountain east of Waterville Rd and Avon Old Farms.

I went from there to Orcas...a bit west of (Scott of Mount Vernon) by ferry boat.

There are no "black snakes," per se. There are black king snakes, black rat snakes, and black racers. Racers and kings will eat other snakes, even venomous ones. That is an Eastern King you have pictured there.
