Mesa considering selling confiscated weapons to gun dealers

The city is considering selling confiscated firearms to gun dealers. Under the plan, the impounded firearms, which include handguns and rifles, would be auctioned to licensed dealers. All firearms valued at less than $100, or ones that are illegal, would be destroyed.

Mayor Keno Hawker tried several times to change the 1998 law, which prohibits the sale of police-impounded guns to the public, but he was voted down by the City Council.

But with the election in March of three conservative, pro-gun council members, Hawker now appears to have the support he needs.

Rex Griswold, Janie Thom and Kyle Jones said this week they are interested in changing the policy.

"I don't see it to be a huge danger to society to put them back on the streets, and it's maybe a benefit to the city," Griswold said.

But Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh said the law is working well, and he doesn't want it changed.

"I don't think the city should be in the business of selling firearms," Kavanaugh said.

The council is expected to hold public hearings on the issue within the next 60 days. http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0911confiscatedguns-ON.html

so long as they don't sell back the cheap guns and the ilegal guns...i think this is a great idea. god knows how many guns are locked up or destroyed because of a stupid law. besides, the city can make some money from the deal so everyone wins.

FROM NY COP GUNS POST: New York state agencies are not allowed to dispose of guns on the open market. Any firearm they want to get rid of must be destroyed. This pertains to seized firearms as well as firearms no longer wanted by any particular agency. NO police trade-ins. Many municipalities do the same. Suffolk County legislated that it will not sell, trade or return to the manufacturer/distributor any firearm. Now for the sad part. The Suffolk County Police Department has a couple of AR-15s, a Thompson, an Uzi, and two S&W sub guns, among others. None can ever be transferred due to this legislation. The serial # on one of the AR's, a Colt, is #1812. They sit in the safe at the range getting dusty and rusty.

I love to buy cop guns. Issue guns or siezed guns, either or both. Auctions are good, but buying the whole lot at once is better.

Trouble is finding agencies with the cojones to do it.

    Mine won't.
