Doc Avery--- Some Of Us Know Him---Good Story

David Avery, DDS, known as "Doc" Avery, the Walther man at the gun shows. If any of you have ever been to a gun show in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, you have seen Doc. Maybe you have bought from him. I have bought from Doc several times. He always has a full island of tables and a big green Walther banner. He has about the best prices around on Glocks, SIGs and Walthers.

Doc and Mrs. Avery are good people. Sounds like Mrs. Avery is a pretty salty lady not willing to be pushed around by some street punks. Story follows.

McKinney: Couple unharmed in armed attack.

Doctor says wife's cool head saved their lives; man, accomplice sought.

Dr. David Avery didn't know what would happen next as he lay face down on his driveway with an assailant's submachine gun aimed at the back of his head.

But within seconds, his 70-year-old wife, Patricia, had retrieved a .38 caliber revolver from the couple's pickup and opened fire. Her five shots forced the gunman to flee.

Collin County sheriff's deputies continued Tuesday to look for the man and an accomplice in the holdup, which took place Sunday evening near McKinney. Meanwhile, Dr. Avery said his wife's quick thinking probably saved their lives.

"If it wasn't for her being so cool-headed, we would've been in
trouble," Dr. Avery said.

Neither Mr. Avery nor his wife was injured, but police said Mrs. Avery might have wounded the masked gunman.

According to police, the incident took place as the Averys were
returning to their home in a rural area north of McKinney after
attending a gun show in Mesquite. Dr. Avery said that as he backed his 1997 GMC truck into his driveway, he noticed a small green car pull in front of him. Then a man wearing a mask and blue clothing and brandishing an AK-47 jumped from the vehicle and ordered the 70-year-old man to get on the ground.

"My wife carries a .38 revolver and started shooting," Dr. Avery said.

Positioning herself behind the passenger side door of the couple's
truck, Mrs. Avery squeezed off five shots, Dr. Avery said. Fleeing
toward the green car, the suspect returned fire, striking the couple's car several times, Dr. Avery said.

Police said they believe the incident was a robbery, but they could not say what the man might have been targeting. The man never demanded that the couple turn over any possessions, police said. The couple's truck had a trailer hitched to it when the incident happened. Police could not say what, if anything, was inside the trailer.

A few hours after the incident, Allen police were dispatched to a
suspicious call on Stacy Road just east of Central Expressway, officials said. According to police, they received a report of a man who was bleeding in his car on the side of the road. When police arrived, the car was gone, but some blood was found on the side of the road. Lt. Norton said it was unclear if that incident was related to the shooting.

Monday morning, sheriff's deputies recovered an abandoned green 1997
Honda behind a building on FM543 north of McKinney with what appeared to be a bullet hole in the rear window, officials said. Lt. Norton said the vehicle is believed to be the one used in Sunday night's incident at Dr. Avery's home.

The vehicle was reported stolen in McKinney on Saturday, officials said. Police said they have recovered some physical evidence from the vehicle, but declined to say what evidence they had found.

"We will continue to investigate," Lt. Norton said.

Dr. Avery said he is "admittedly somewhat angry" about the incident, but was thankful he and his wife of 51 years were OK.

"I told her she was a hero," he said.

Anyone with information about the incident or where the suspects might be is asked to call the Collin County sheriff's office at 972-424-4797.

I sincerely hope that Mrs. Avery got one of them. And I hope that the wound is extremely painful, and ultimately fatal.
