Teen shot, killed inside church after pointing B-B gun at police officers

Albuquerque, New Mexico-AP -- A teen-ager who went to a New Mexico church claiming he was possessed by demons is dead after being shot by police.

A police detective says the boy pointed a weapon at officers that turned out to be a B-B gun.

A church official says 14-year-old Dominic Montoya came to the baptist church in Albuquerque seeking prayer.

She says the choir director's wife sat down with him -- but then noticed Montoya was carrying a gun and got the attention of her husband, who called police.

Three officers have been placed on paid leave for three days, a standard procedure following police shootings.

Police say the teen had earlier threatened his mother, neighbors and church members with the same gun.

Tragic on both ends. That kid needed some help and the cops have to live the rest of thier life knowing they killed a kid because of a BB gun.

If you will blame gun makers for every shooting then blame car maker for every car accident.

Yes tragic. Doesn't the behavior of peoples kids send any red flags to them? If the boy threatened his family why didn't his family call the police when he left the house. I am sure they knew it was a BB gun. I think the US needs a wake up call, your kids are acting out because you are worthless parents. Discipline is not abuse and some people need to realize that. The lady at the church should have put him in time-out, because I'm sure that works.

APD has a long and sad history of shooting people that other PD's manage to avoid shooting. Suicide by cop is fairly common here. This poor kid was a diagnosed schizophrenic.

I recently caught a local student film on cable TV's community access channel and whoever made the film used a prop gun which was in fact a $10 Daisy BB pistol. Of course they dubbed in a loud BOOM when it went off. What this means is that the filmmakers, who obviously knew it was a BB gun, assumed that the viewers would NOT be able to tell the difference, and for most viewers who watch the film, except people like me, they're probably right. Stupid.

That has happened here in Indy. Have you guys seen some of the modern pellet guns out there? They look real from 2 feet away. No way in the world could anyone tell from a few paces that it wasn't a real gun pointed at you. I read a year or two ago about a couple of teens were using a pellet gun for a robberies. Somehow one victim had a hunch that something wasn't right. He pulled his 9mm and shot the kid. Kind of like bringing a knife to a gun fight!

Why are cops allowed to point guns at you but you are not allowed to point one at them ?
Haw many people here has had a cop point a gun at them for no valid reason?
    I have more than once.

Cops pull their guns for different reasons. Criminals point guns at cops for usually one reason, to shoot them. I understand your point but cops are only supposed to shoot if they fear for life limb or eyesight. If someone is pointing a gun at you you have that same right. So the question is did you think that the cop that was pointing the gun at you was going to kill you? I'm sure the two cops were justified, criminals don't point guns then say"Freeze" they shoot without saying anything and kill people. Cops are here to stop that from happening. My stamp JUSTIFIED!

I've had cops stop me and draw but never point at me on 3 occasions. The most serious case was heading from Reno to Lake Tahoe a number of years ago. Some jerk had shot a dealer in Reno and took off on a red Honda wearing an orange golf shirt. Well you know what I looked like. One put his lights on and pulled me over on 341. Before I could get my stand down and helmet and glasses off, 2 more back up cars were there. The officer that approached me kept a constant dialog going. The other 4 had their weapons drawn but at their side. No one needed to tell me to freeze! In 20 minutes it was all over. From my limited experiences, you would have to be freeked out or other circumstances to be held at gun point. BTW, my traveling buddy rode right past us and was waiting at the campground!

I find it unacceptable for any officer to point a firearm at anyone unless he perceives a real threat. I'm pretty sure I have more firearms experience than most officers and I still don't point at anything I don't intend to KILL. I'm from the old school and if you get down to it, any cop that points his gun at me without telling me why is considered to be a threat by me.

    Lightning --
Because it's not a game. All those episodes of wild police chases and dumbest crooks in the world are possible because every day, people assume that lawbreaking is all a big game and cops have to play by certain rules, so the perps can stretch it as far as they want. Nuts. The cops are there to enforce laws passed by our elected representatives. Cops' job, like everybody else's job, is to go home at the end of the shift. Cops are entitled to win every encounter. It's not about being fair -- it's about overwhelming the situation and stopping bad guys with superior, not inadequate, use of force as necessary. It is their job never to lose an argument. If you have a problem, tell it to the judge on Monday morning.

I agree there are lots of situations where cops are justified for pointing thier gun at you.
I just dont consider holding a cocked gun in your face daring you to move or you will be shot justifible for going 6 mph over the speed limit.

Stupid kid, I hope the darn anti-gunners don't try and use this against us.

If he's stupid enough to point a BB gun at a police officer, then its better off he doesn't breed in my opinion.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Well sometimes a bb looking gun is not a bb gun at all .....
Police officer enters Home ,one enters room finds this black kid
pointing a gun at him with a verry small hole at Barrel end he lowers gun says had it over ,kid fires gun .10 caliber steel dart goes thru
class IIIV kevlar and trauma plates killing him instantly .....

Gun was a cal.10 KBG armor piercing Gun ,his "father" got it as a war relic from Viet Nam , he "passed" it as a bb gun too ...quite deceiving!! ???????????

For those of you who don't understand why sometimes a police officer will point a gun at someone, I have a suggestion.

Join up, get trained, suit up and hit the streets. Work some projects and bars and mean streets. Work night shift on Christmas Eve when everyone else you know is home with their families. Work morning shift on Labor Day, when everyone else you know is at the lake. Deal with dopers, drunks, whores, robbers, killers, thieves and assorted crazies on a daily basis. AND...Do it all for under $30,000 a year.

    NO? I didn't think so.
