MP5 As A Worthwhile Addition?

A buddy of mine just got himself an HK94 (MP5). It's a sweet shooter and a real *-whooper on the range. We didn't try any "long distance" shots with it though. The farthest we went out was 25 yards. Can anybody with MP5 experience give me the skinny on the platform itself? Pros. Cons. Any info would be helpful. I'm trying to decide whether it would be prudent to add one to my collection. I'm not a "collector" per se. I try to keep the contents of my safe to useful items and don't want to spend the cash on a "range toy".

Evil if you can't get it with the 3-round burst option go ahead and buy an M1!! Actually it was kind of fun to fire in the burst mode....but not enough to invest the amount of money required. I'd save the money and buy more ammo for the M1A. Beach

It was pretty sweet. My buddies was a four-way (Safe, Semi-Auto, Three Round Burst and Full-Auto). Quite fun too shoot. But, alas, he lives in Oregon which is a Class III state. I live in Washington, which is a poo poo state.Semi-Auto only for Evil.

Evil....unless you're going to have to defend the neighborhood, single handed, it's a "range toy". Mudge the rock 'n roller

Evil ATFI had a HK-94, sold it & a few accessories for $4900, bought a Special Weapons SW5 (HK-94 clone) for $1300 and never looked back! My SW5 is every bit as good as the HK, parts interchange and everything! I picked up an HK SD Shroud to hide the fugly 16" barrel and a pinned open folding stock ... until you get up close you can't tell its not a real HK ... I highly reccomend them!

Evil.. I have an HK 94 converted by Ciener.Having a 10inch barrel makes it impossible for long range shots with high acuaracy, but up to say 100yds it is very impressive. Switch the selector to full auto and only the first shot is going to be on the mark, the rest will be around it. As to whether you need one depends on you. I needed one and got it and wouldnt sell it either. Its fun to shoot AR's and AK's etc but rock n roll is just too much fun. Heck I need an UZI now lol Bummer about the Wa gun laws

I agree with kimberkid! SW makes a VERY nice piece. I've got their SW3 (HK91 clone) and almost bought the SW5 too.[This message has been edited by GreenLantern (edited 01-17-2002).]

As has been stated, MP5's are pretty darned accurate out to 100yds. Head size groups are possible at these ranges, but shop around different types/bullet weights for your gun's most accurate factory load. One quirk that MP5's have is the possibility of a piece of brass finding it's way behind the bolt, completely locking the gun up, while firing full-auto. I'm not all that clear on how this happens, but I've seen several guns experience this on the range. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does you're out of business in a hurry. The only way to clear this malfunction is to open up the receiver. MP5's aren't the only subguns capable of this type jam, but due to their design they are tough to clear in a hurry. Before you decide what type range toy to purchase, do yourself a favor and go wring out a Thompson. Shooting one of these is kinda like driving an old T-Bird. There are newer ones that may be faster and sleeker, but they just don't have the same class.

Does anyone know the overall length of an SW5 with a 16.25 inch barrel and standard, non-collapsable shoulder stock?

Evil:Why do you want a pistal round in a rifle configuration. If you are not going class 3 then there are less expensive 9mm rifles on the market. If just for show then buy what you think is showy. My 2 cents

EvilWith the factory stock my SW5 measures 34", with the pinned folding stock its 35.5"By the way, my 30 round mags work flawlessly but the 40 round mags Jam Jam Jam but it makes for a good picture ... same for the SEF lower, it only shoots in semi-auto reguardless if the selector is in E or F positions
