Firefighters Win Battle Over Ground-Zero StatueA week's worth of intensely emotional debate over New York City Fire Department plans to erect a racially altered statue commemorating three firefighters who raised the Star and Stripes at Ground Zero has come to an end, with the fire department and the statue's underwriter retreating in the face of a tidal wave of public protest. In a press release issued late Thursday, the FDNY said:"New York City Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scopetta today announced that he will consider new options for a fitting memorial to honor the members of the fire department who died and those who worked tirelessly at the World Trade Center following the Sept. 11 attacks."Bruce Ratner, president and CEO of Forrest City Ratner Companies, said he would continue to underwrite the cost of the memorial.""I will support the Fire Department's decision on what consitutes a fitting and inspiring memorial that pays tribute to these heroes," Ratner is quoted as saying. "That has been my desire ever since the World Trade Center attack."Commissioner Scopetta and Mr. Ratner will consider various possibilities that would pay tribute to all members of the department, the FDNY said, adding that "they would continue to discuss and explore ideas to create a lasting permanent memorial."The FDNY's announcement does not say that the memorial will remain faithful to the famous flag-raising photo - or even that the photo will continue to be the basis for a new sculpture.Commissioner Scopetta and Mr. Ratner met Thursday at the suggestion of New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who told reporters Wednesday, "It's unfortunate that we're in the situation that we are http://www.newsmax.com/showinsidecover.shtml?a=2002/1/17/162132

So instead of creating an altered reality based it on a historically accurate photograph, they will raise something symbolic & politically correct. Nunn won't let me express my feelings in this forum.

In other words, the Poltically Correct crowd has won. They will step away from the altered rendition of the flag raising, however there won't be a sculpture of the flag raising at all. I guess its just as well, if we can't get the truth displayed then we will keep it to ourselves. A sad state of affairs.....

I got a kick out of the argument FOR the politically/racially correct sculpture of the firefighter photo. The guy defending the alteration (bastardization) of the thing was talking about the fact that a lot of black firefighters also lost their lives in the World Trade Center collapse. When asked how many, he answered "twelve."Lets see...350 total dead, 12 were black, that's a little over 3% black. So I guess it was only fair to make the sculpture 33 1/3% black, huh?Lowrider...a mathematician, not a racist.

One could really view knocking out the flag raising memorial statue as a victory of honesty and reason over the excesses of political correctness in this attempt to rewrite history. The lefties have to be seething over their defeat.
