My Ides......

A few years back my world collapsed with the passing of my grandfather. Though the time I had to spend with him was mostly during my younger years,( 11 and under- I am now 31)he left me four very important things that are nearly non existant in todays world. Love for family and true friends, respect for my elders, and an appreciation for guns. I know there are people out there with similar qualities, but they are few and far between. Mostly I only see people older than myself displaying these traits. And, rarely do I ever hear or see someone younger than myself say please or thank you, or hold a door open for somebody else. At times I feel like the last of the way things once were.By the way. The fourth thing was a boat he bought back in '39. Poppy, if you can manage to see this, I finished restoring the boat. And, the motor still runs like the day you bought it. My only regret is that we didn't wet a line one last time. You are missed and loved.

Pelican I don't have any pictures as of yet, but as soon as I get some developed I'll post one for you. I'm still waiting for some more enjoyable weather to take it out. For now I'll describe it to maybe pacify you a little. It's a lapstrake style. A shade over sixteen and a half feet long with a 54" beam. It has four oars, but the Evenrude four stroke moves it just fine. He bought the motor the same time as the boat.

It was hand made by two brothers. The brass tag on the top of the bow says Fox River Boat Works,Inc.-W.E.&E.D. Kidney-West De Pere, Wis. The trailer it's on is oak as far as I can tell, and the axle looks like it was taken from the front end of an old Chevy truck. It's even got the original rubber on the wheels yet.

Sounds like you really have something there to be proud of. You said you did a restoration, what was involved?

I had to strip it down to the ribs, and essentially do a complete rebuild. The thing I thought was the neatest part of it all, aside from the fact that I didn't have to replace any of the original boards, was that all the screws and small nails I pulled out were brass. Even the strip that runs the length of the boat to protect the keel was brass. All of which I was able to put back in its' rightful place.

Well, congratulations. It's a lot of work but it can also be a labor of love. Please tell me I love it!If you haven't seen her before this is my labor. DOLORES CATHERINE, c.a. 1936, Covacevich Shipyard, Biloxi, Miss.

She looks wonderful. Mine is no where near that size, but sure to be just as much fun as I remember. But you are right about the labor of love. There was many a time while I was tearing it down that I had to walk away for a little while. The memories were just to strong.[This message has been edited by Brth729 (edited 03-15-2002).]
