PETA Launches Attack on Sport Fishing

Thursday, August 15, 2002
By Adam Housley

LOS ANGELES - For many Americans, "fishing" conjures up images of a quiet lake or gentle stream with man and nature at peace.

But not everybody sees it that way.

"We're trying to get fishing banned in all state parks," PETA's Bruce Friedrich said.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says fishing is a violent and cruel sport that victimizes the innocent inhabitants of the nation's waterways. They've initiated a campaign demanding states ban the time-honored sport.

"They have the capacity to feel pain. They have a capacity to suffer," Friedrich said. "For reasons that really defy logic, we allow people to spend their afternoon impaling them on hooks."

Fisherman have cast their own barbs.

"They eat each other and they die," fisherman Anthony Young said. "Is that cruelty?"

Fishing is not permitted in state parks in about half of the states, but none of the rest have taken PETA's bait. At least nine, including California and Washington, have said "no."

It's a sentiment echoed by anglers.

"Our God-given right as Americans is to fish the rivers and streams," Kevin Hanson said. "It's where memories are built."

Other conservation groups like Trout Unlimited say PETA's plan is too extreme. Trout Unlimited's William Strickland said falling for PETA's reasoning is like falling for the story of the big fish that got away.

"To base a campaign on whether or not a fish feels pain is, quite frankly, a stretch," he said.

PETA said that hunting has been banned, and even removing trees and rocks is illegal, so fishing is a natural next step. And not just because it's cruel to fish.

"The filament lines are everywhere, the sinkers are everywhere, the beer cans are everywhere -- not exactly responsible stewardship," Friedrich said.

Fishermen respond that a few bad apples are no reason to spoil everyone's fun, and they have a message for PETA:

"Everyone wants to get in everyone else's business but their own," Young said. "Leave me alone. Let me enjoy my fishing."

Anyone with half a brain knew that it was only a matter of time before PETA went after sport fishing. I was saying it would happen years and years ago to anybody who would listen, was told I was off my rocker, why would they bother fishermen.

Gosh, I am just SO shocked. Not.

They are testing the publics tolerance of their idiotic ideals. Next will be PETI- People for Ethical Treatment of Insects, PETTS- People for Ethical Treatment of Trees and Shrubs. Where will the idiotic tree hugging stop. The people who say they don't hunt and don't feel its right to kill animals have encouraged these modern day hippy fundamentalists and its only a matter of time and their boredom until they start some half baked flake fest that will infringe upon something they enjoy doing. I for one hope its sooner than later.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

Let them clean the rivers after an overpopulation starves oxigen and all fish die out.....

Conservation can be done better by fishermen than by Little Mermaid lovers ....

Anyone remember the 30's big salmon river die-offs ???? when bear population was driven down to near extinction ???
fish OVERPOPULATION caused massive die offs...

Imagine how the poor fish feel when those filleted slabs go on the skillet in a little butter and salt. What's the difference between fish in national parks and fish anywhere else? None. So ladies and gentlemen, this is just the NOSE OF THE FISH-CAMEL!!!

These PETA people need to watch THE THING a few times and see that scene where the doctor places the stethoscope on the alien carrot sprouts and says "It sounds like the cry of a newborn baby!" Before long, even vegetarianism will be an insult to life. I wonder what they have in mind for us to eat that didn't used to be alive....? I imagine there's a contingency plan in a PETA drawer somewhere. What, you think I'm kidding?

Maybe this Friedrich guy ought to be arrested for fraud! He has been collecting money (from idiots) to use for the ethical treatment of ANIMALS but is using it for FISH!!!!

I'm sure this observation has been offered in previous posts regarding the PETA group but here goes again...When they start in with nonsense such as this "ban fishing" idea, they should be encouraged to do so as it only serves to point out how silly and out of step they really are. They turn off far more people with moves like this than they win over to their thinking.

Not only that, their name sounds like a bad Bette Davis imitation:
