Im thinking of sending my reciever and forend of my handi rifle to NEF to have them fit a few barrels to it. I currently have the 243 but am undecided on the additions. They have so many to choose from its a hard decision. They have 30-06, 308, 280, 270, 223, 45-70, 44 mag, 22 hornet, 22 mag, 17 hmr and several others. Im thinking maybe the 45-70 but I know little about this cartridge. What size of round is it? I know its a 45 cal. but how long, what would it compare to. Its that or one of the other larger calibers such as the 30-06, 308 or 280. Then I want a lower cal maybe the 22 hornet. What do you think?

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

45-70 is a 2.035" case. Most chambers will allow seating a 500 grain bullet out to about 2.9" length. I don't know how strong the NEF rifle is compared to the Marlins and Rugers but you should be able to start a 400 grain bullet at 1950 FPS or so. My favorite load in Marlin strength actions is 56 grains of H322 with a 405 grain hard cast bullet and for the Ruger strength actions it is 62 grains of H322 under the same bullet. With a 400 grain cast bullet loaded to 1900 + FPS it is a genuine 200 yard cartridge. 300 grain bullets should be able to attain 2100 FPS from the Marlin strength actions and 2300 from a Ruger strength action. So if it were me, I'd go with a 45-70 or the 280 barrel.
