This picture was taken by a photographer in Juneau, Alaska last week. State is now trying to protect it from hunters when the season starts next week.

On the serious side, I know nothing of bears either Grizzly or Teddy Bears. But that Bear doesn't look well. I'm judgeing this by his hide were he has either rubbed or chewed at it and the lack of clarity or brightness in his eyes.

Other than being Photographed has anybody gotten the opportunity to check the bears health?

I think the bear has already been painted.

Why does man kill? He kills for food. But not only for food; frequently, he must have a beverage.

In Michigan it is against the law to shoot albino whitetails. I have never seen a albino black bear. Great picture.

mcneely77, it's not an albino bear. Notice it's eyes. It lacks the pink eyes of an albino.

Photo does not look authentic.Look at the bears feet where they go into water. Also the background looks like a cut and paste job. Where did you find this picture?

White black bear story has made the national news.

Alaska Wildlife Fish & Game has now placed a hunting ban on all 'white black bears'.

That's the name given to the sub species. Having different colors from cinammon, to a golden retriever color and the rarest- which is in the photo. That's why it looks different.
A Blue Faced-White Black Bear. Hope I got that right.

Now, I will certainly take a camera on my sheep hunt.
If I was bear hunting, no ban in force, and I came across this rariety, I'd get as close as possible, and very-very-very reluctantly "shoot it" with my camera.

Better yet, there is a fast growing hunting sport where you "shoot" certain game animals with a tranquilizer gun. Then have your picture taken with it. Now, that I'd like to do with such a rariety to keep it alive for the locals, sportsmen, and animal lovers to appreciate, and hopefully breed more.

Spent the weekend with some hunter education instructors and conservation officers. One conversation was about bears. asked a C.O. what would happen in Indiana if a deer hunter stumbled upon a black bear. There are none in Indiana hence no hunting season for them. His answer was ,"Shoot it if you want, there's not hunting regulation prohibiting it." Same for wild boar. No hunting season nor are they recognized as a game species in Indiana. I would not shoot an albino deer and I really don't think I'd shoot a black bear here in Indiana. I just think it would be interesting to see one in the wild. The shooting comes once there is a healthy enough population to support hunting them. I think Indiana could have a viable bear population, after all, how many people have never really seen a whitetail and they're everywhere around here?

I saw this on the evening news last week, but after taking a closer look I have to agree with 4GodandCountry. This picture has been tampered with. It appears to be to be cut & pasted on to it's back ground.

    By LARRY CAMPBELL
    .c The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Aug. 25) - When hunting season opens Sept. 1, one special bear will be off limits: a rare white-colored black bear that a photographer spotted near Juneau and turned into a local celebrity.

The Alaska Board of Game ordered an emergency closure on hunting of all ``white phase'' black bears in the Juneau area. Effectively, that covers only one known white bear, the one photographed earlier this month by Pat Costello.

Costello petitioned the board Thursday asking that the bear he's dubbed ``Spirit bear'' be exempt, and the board ruled Friday.

``People recognize this is a unique animal,'' Costello said. ``They don't want to see it just made into another rug.''

Game board Executive Director Diana Cote said the state Department of Fish and Game also support the ban. Game officials said they had been flooded with calls and e-mail from people who saw Costello's photos on the Internet.

State biologists have known of the bear's existence for a few years. It looks almost like a polar bear but has distinctive raccoon-like markings around the eyes. Experts say it likely is a variation of what biologists call a glacier bear - genetically a black bear, but with a light coat that can run from cinnamon to blue-white.

Glacier bears are scarce, but a bear this white is even more rare. Biologists in Southeast Alaska said they have not seen another like it.

``Actually, there are a lot of different color morphs with black bear. But not quite this white. This is definitely unusual,'' said Neil Barten, a Department of Fish and Game biologist.

The hunting ban on the white black bear will last at least until a game board meeting Nov. 1, when the board will decide whether to extend it through the end of the hunting season, June 30.

Thanks for the picture----I chased a small black bear on my 4-wheeler
about 2 summers ago trying to get a better look at it,it went down
a mountain side and had to stop.My wife questioned me on what I would have done if I had caught it,DUH!!!!!never thought about that.Friend took a picture of it about a month later and gave it to me.

"It was like that when I got here".

I doubt the photo is a hoax...we have had white
black bears here in Minnesota too. After a whole
lot of public outcry and controversy the bear was
trapped and put into a bear "sanctuary". A law was
also passed to prevent the shooting of a white bear.
I believe the bear was let loose after the hunting
season so it could run off and hibernate...I'm not
sure if the bear was ever seen again...Maybe it moved
    to Alaska???

i watched a documentary on this bear. He is niether albino or a corss bread. the species lives on an island in canada near prince rupert where the breading pool is isolated enough where the recessive trait has a chance to flourish. They are protected and the documentay is called ghost bear and its by national geograhpic if anyone is interested. there are also black gray wolves on this island pretty interesting...you all should check it out.
