Watered-down gun immunity bill passes

The bill would protect gun owners who had their guns stolen

A Senate Committee passed a bill Tuesday that would give immunity from lawsuits to gun owners whose weapons are stolen and later used in a crime.

The bill was amended to specify that the gun had to be stolen for owners to have immunity. The previous version of the bill gave gun owners immunity even if they carelessly left the gun somewhere.

Gun control advocates say the previous version was ridiculous because a person could leave a loaded gun at a day care center and still not be held liable in civil court.

Bill supporters say the amendment clears up that problem while still protecting gun owners whose weapons are stolen.

The bill passed the Senate Criminal, Civil and Public Policy Committee 8-2. It now moves to the full Senate for consideration.

The fact that ANY bill of this nature passed bodes well for gunowners. Perhaps this common sense legislature is the first breeze of a stong wind to sweep the nation.
