go to your closest DPS office first, where you renew your DL and such. Tell them you want to apply for your CHL. They then will give you a pre-addressed post card that asked a few questions...fill it out and mail it. In a few weeks you will receive a packet, a BIG packet from DPS in Austin that will contain VERYTHING you must fill out. MAKE a copy of it ALL, use the COPY to fill in all the information, once you have it correct, triple check it for accuracy, then copy your info to the original forms. I found a place in Dallas that did everything, 12 hrs, on SAT...they did my fingerprinting for all agencies that want them,my photo(has to meet the "photo requirements",no birthday or hunting pics accepted...must be current and similiar to passport photo,my written exam, my ranges qualifying, everthing at one location...if I remembercorrectly it cost $150. They did everything but fill out the REAMS of personal information that is required. Then it is all sent to Austin and in my case 45 days I received my CHL from them...all there is to it. The CHL fee if I remember was $135 that was sent along with the paperwork...total is pushing $300 bucks hard. If you want to carry a semi, qualify with a semi..if you want to carry a revolverqualify with a revolver. If you qualify with a semi, your CHL will be coded with DA/SA...which allows you to carry a semi OR revolver....Qualify with a revolver and you CANNOT carry a semi, it will be coded withSA ONLY. The "study book" that comes in the packet is the STATUTE that is as passed, on the books...which means it is written in "legal language", not like your normal textbook. Be ready to scratch your head a lotand for writers cramps...as there is a lot to go over...hope this helps some...quiet easy actually, just takes awhile....

RUGERNUT3,I think KSTALL was asking about an FFL, not a CHL.

As a matter of fact, I am going after my CCL so that information from RUGERNUT3 is very useful also. Thanks! I figured going after an FFL would be tedious and long, since I am dealing with the Fed. The reason I asked this question initially is because I see all these advertisements in ShotGun News about buying these packets to help obtain an FFL. I figured there was more to it than just filling out an application and was wondering if there where pitfalls to watch out for. I have an FFL packet from the ATF for a license but have delayed filling it out until my housing situation improves, looking for a house while living in an apartment. Thanks!

Save your money. They'll sell you the same thing you can get free from your local branch of the BATF. Call them, they're in the phone book.

There is no reason to spend any money on the advertised packets. All the information you need is available free from ATF.You would be wasting your time attempting to get licensed from an apartment. Although not specifically prohibited, there are requirements that would be next to impossible like obtaining a letter from your landlord and possibly zoning issues. Many of the same problems will crop up if you attempt to get licensed at a private residence. It can be done, its just difficult. Even neighborhood civic association regulations and deed restrictions will come into play. You should also make sure you truly want a dealer's license, and that you actually intend to be in the business as opposed to just using the license to acquire stuff for your own use. That means you'll also need a Texas Sales Tax Certificate, an Assumed Name Certificate from the County Clerk for your DBA, and you'll also need to reflect the business proceeds on your Federal tax returns. The list goes on.
