Anti-gun Forest Sawyer

There was a "forum" about "air safety" on PMSNBC last nite. The host was Forest Sawyer. As I expected, he had a "selective hearing" problem when it came to putting guns in the hands of the cockpit crew. One airplane driver was all for it and explained how an armed cockpit crew would be a "last line of defense" against a skyjacker. He explained how the gun would be used ONLY when the cockpit door was breached. Mr. Sawyer's hearing/comprehension difficulty kicked in and he made the comment "Do we want a Rambo type with a gun strapped to his leg shooting up the cabin?" He heard only the part he wanted to hear and distorted it into something that didn't even closely resemble what the Captain said. The guy who invented the "sky-marshall" program, naturally, defended the use of his guys/gals, as armed passengers. I have a REAL BIG problem with anybody carrying a gun in the passenger cabin. Let me give you this scenario: A sky-marshall is on board. So are 5 bad guys. Their plan goes like this....2 of the bad guys attack someone. The sky-marshall leaps into action, gun drawn, AND THERBY REVEALS HIMSELF to the other 3 bad guys who overpower and kill him. Now the bad guys have a gun. Not a good thing. Then Mr. Sawyer asks both Captains, "would you be willing to shoot through the body of the flight attendant in order to take out the bad guy"? Both said they would. My question would be, "What is the Captain doing in the passenger cabin?" His job would be to defend the cockpit and get the plane on the ground ASAP, not to come out and engage the sky-jackers. And what the hell are the passengers doing all this time? I, for one, would be throwing things at the bad guys. Like the sky-phones that are at every seat and weigh about half a pound. Use it as a club or a missile. Use a lap-top as a shield or a weapon to try to overpower the bastards. Rip out the seat cushions to use as a shield while you rush them. Wrap the life vests around your arms to shield against knife cuts. Then there was the discussion about who should be responsible for security at airports. Everyone agreed that it shoud be the feds. That's OK with me as long as the people who are doing the screening are well trained and SPEAK ENGLISH. I came out of San Jose, CA last Monday and NONE, repeat NONE, of the screeners spoke anything resembling understandable English. Enough for now.Mudge

Amen to the ground security people being able to speak English! Flew out of Logan (Boston) in August - every single one at the metal detector would have benefited from an ESL class & as memory serves, one or more had Arabic names. Coincidence? Maybe.
