Reloading .45LC -vs- factory

I was reloading yesterday - #5 AA, 11grn with a 230grn JHP. I was checking my COL at 1.60 and then grabbed a ball rnd from HSM to check against. The length on those was more like 1.53, which is no big deal but got me thinking about their factory load. I pulled their 255 grn ball and checked their powder, of course I've no way to tell the type of powder they used but the ranges I read for that weight are any where from 5.0 grn to 16.8 depending on the powder. Yeah you guessed it they were right at 5.0 grns. Now that's kinda scarey knowing I could have relied on an underpowered ball as a form of defense (I was really only useing these for target practice) - sure am glad I got those Dies for 45LC. Of course now I gotta go out and feel the pain of what my Ruger 7.5" can inflict.....

Blue, SP is dead on. Commercial reloading companies compete on price, so they cut corners wherever they can. The bullets are will also be the cheapest they can find. Not something I would select for a defensive load given an alternative.
