My brother (and mother and grandma) just got back from Austria. My brother and mom went there to pick up my grandma (she's 90 years old) and bring her back to the U.S. to see her new grandkids.Anyway, they flew from Detroit Metro Airport, via Northwest Airlines, to Schipol Int'l airport in Amsterdam, then a connector flight to Vienna via Austrian Airlines. The trip back was the same, only in reverse. My brother had with him, inadvertantly, a large straight screwdriver in his computer bag (like 10" long, steel shank). He totally forgot that he had it. But, fact is, they totally missed it.Just proves my point, they can search and scan and make all the rules in the world. But, a person who is determined can and WILL carry a weapon of some kind. Again, I can make a weapon out of almost anything, so why couldn't a terrorist?

Concealed,I went to the Indy F-1 race yesterday. I had the legal limit 14" cooler with 8 beers plus 4 sub sandwiches on top of them. I didn't know what to expect. I hoped that they wouldn't open up my subs for inspection. I walked in, presented my ticket, stopped a few feet away for a cooler check. I removed the lid, the guy looked at the subs, and passed me through. I could have had my Tec-9 with 4 50 round clips in there instead of the beer! I couldn't believe it. Anyone else been to ball games or other big events?Jeff

I went to a college football game two weeks ago, capacity crowd, very packed. Security was checking bags, however they weren't looking very thoroughly. My buddy had one of those stadium seats that, to me, looks like a flak jacket. It folds in half, and has a shoulder strap. The security guy just looked at it and said go ahead. There were so many people flooding in that it would have been easy to walk in with an M-60 and a 200-round belt of ammo. There was no way that they were checking everybody going in. It was just too crowded and they were checking so fast.
Better to have and not need, than need and not have.

I was at a concert last week, and they checked everybody thoroughly. Walk through metal detectors, then the handheld metal detectors, followed by frisking (males and females), then the purse search (no bags or coolers were allowed). They even checked my boots. Not that anybody would want to hurt ugly old Steven Tyler, anyway. And they didn't care how long the lines got.

My kids went to several concerts this summer long before the recent tragedy and security was particularly tight - they couldn't squeak in much more than a pack of gum. No outside drinks and the concession stands kept the tops for all drinks sold - in plastic containers only. Like Mark said - they didn't care how long the lines were.
