Water proof ammo cache

What are your favorite methods for waterproofing your ammo cache?
I put all the ammo (.223/7.62x39) on stripper clips, then in bandoleers (for easy of carry when retreived). I put the bandoleers in a vacuum sealer bag and seal them up. (I got a cheap bag sealer at a yard sale for a couple of bucks). Two sealed bandoleers fit nicely in a .30 caliber ammo can, with a little room left for a desiccant pack. Two ammo cans fit nicely in a 5 gal. plastic paint bucket. (The paint buckets have a rubber gasket, where the sheetrock mud buckets do not). That give me three layers of waterproofing.
The buckets can be buried without worry that they would rust. It is also a good idea to plant some steel in/on the ground, to frustrate the curious and their metal detectors.
Any other ideas out there?

greetings, you have a good method going there, if you want to use the sheet rock mud buckets you can use dry ice to pack with, but you got to use gloves. most med supplyer carry it at varying prices. respt submitted dads-freehold

Well, I'm not burying ammo or anything (yet), but I haven't found anything I like better than those old $5 olive-drab ammo cans at the gun shows. They seal pretty tight and while I wouldn't dunk them in water I think they do a pretty good job of keeping ammo in original condition.

offeror--that's one of the best methods I know of. If you have a good military issued ammo can that has been re-furbished and has a good gasket on it, just toss in your ammo and a dessicant pack. Good to go.

I guess if I were going to bury some for a period of time I'd go down to Wal-Mart and find one of the big heavy plastic "tupperware" type storage containers with the best sealing top I could find, drop the loaded mil surplus ammo cans in, Maybe tape around the seal, maybe even drop it in a lawn bag for good measure, and dig a hole. That should be safe from the elements for quite a while, as plastic is one of the darnest long lasting synthetics man has ever devised. Just ask the man at the local dump.

    inspectorknucklehead--yours is a good plan.
For the others using surplus ammo cans:
If you have one that the seal is a little loose, use
some silicone sealant around the lid seal.

Some time back, I picked up some plastic 20mm boxes which are water tight and float. I use them for critical items on canoe trips, but if the flag ever went up, I'm sure they would do quite well underground. Just remember that the Gestapo have some very sophisticated equipment for just these contigencies so anything you are trying to protect from those jack-booted thugs will have to be placed somewhere that will not be associated with you or anyone else who might be on Big Brother's target list.
