Some states require the collection of sales tax on interstate sales and some do not. You will have to check with your state.

Kevin- I am a PA resident, and believe it or not, you have to pay sales tax on ALL purchases you make out of state. If you buy a mail something mail order from Texas, you have to send the PA dept of revenue the sales tax on the item you bought. If the item was $100, you are supposed to send the state six dollars.
I have had guns shipped to me. Some FFLs will figure on the sales tax, others do not-whether or not the FFL collects sales tax, you are required to pay a sales tax to the state. Do most people do this? No, most people do not realize you are supposed to send the state sales tax on any purchases from another state. However, you are supposed to send it to Harrisburg.

I had the same problem. I think Illinois is the only state doing this now. You have to submit a form from the irs when you purchase a out of state gun for sales tax. I just went to another ffl, and they knew nothing about it. The irs says it will be able to track it down, so I took my chances. I would also like to add that I have only bought 1 gun online. It was a bad mistake. The cheapest ffl in my area gets 50.00 for the transfer, and I had to pay 25.00 shipping. Ripped off again.

I have one dealer who takes 10% of sales price and Indiana sales tax, another dealer who charges a flat $30 for the privilege, and another dealer who charges a flat $20 to handle a transaction. There seems to be little agreement on the necessity of sales tax, but most people I talk to say it is NOT necessary to collect sales tax in Indiana. I figure if they get dunned for it, they can take it out of their $30 transfer fee, since they only charge $10 for a local transfer. What's so special about mail order, other than their perception that it's competition and they want to "wet their beaks"?

Why is a Black Powder firearm going through an FFL dealer?

Allen the BATF requires a 4473 on inline muzzleloaders that use a 209 shotshell primer for ignition. Stupid yes but who ever said they were smart. My dealer charges $25.00 to recieve and the service is taxable at 8%. So in the end it actually costs me $27.00. I just keep that in mind when bidding. He also knows I ask him for his price first on anything he can get from his distributor.

Well, NH has no sales tax, but even if it did, the only way I would pay it on an Internet or mail order sale would be if there was no way to avoid it. Damn governments take too bloody much money to waste as it is. I do know many people shop here for many products to avoid paying sales taxes in their home states & Provinces. Bully for them. When I'm out of state at a gun show, I will not buy anything on which a tax will be imposed unless it is cheap enough to recoup that expense. In my experience, most vendors, especially those not native to the state where the show is held, ignore the tax Gestapo. Hey, if the penalty for illegal entry to the country is to get citizenship, this is the least they can do for the natives!
