MIGHTY UNimpressed w/ Speer brass

Just took some time off to do some loading. Non-reloading friend gave a huge pile of Speer brass in .40 S&W / .357 SIG. Since the Dillon was already set up for this head, it seemed like a good thing to do on a rainy Sunday. Man, what a PITA. Between 10 & 20% of the cases had problems - had to beat on some to get the primers out, others the new primers are barely friction fit. Took as much time as doing it the old fashioned way on a single stage. It wasn't the setup - after the problem manifested itself in such numbers, I checked and then tried some Winchester and other mfg brass. No problems. Never have seen such variation in tolerance within a single brand of roughly the same age, especially considering the stuff is 1xF.

Anyone else encountered similar problems with this brand?

Ryan, I don't who made it (the quality would make me suspect the Beijing Brass Works!), but I do know for darn sure if he gives me any more, it will go straight to the recycling barrel. I can buy good brass for a few pennies each and I scrounge most of what I use for the expensive effort of picking it up after the LEO's do their shooting. Either way, it is a bargain compared to the frustration I had today. And Speer lost an ammo customer, to boot. I don't buy much factory ammo, but I won't buy anything I can't reload unless it costs as much as my reloads do. At roughly $0.50 a round, I sure as heck ain't gonna throw any money away on Speer ammo when I can't use the bloody brass.

I know to stay away from that now. I hate brass prep with a paasion. It is a necessity only in my book, no joy what so ever. If I had to deal with brass like that all the time, I would buy factory ammo.

A couple months ago, dad was cleaning out his closet, and came accross 2 boxes of Speer 357 brass. All once fired. I had to drive every primer out with a Lee loader decap pin. Couldn't get em out any other way. This brass was at least 20 years old. This isn't a new problem. Never did try and go any further than that with them.

woods, Veeerrry interesting . . . I have about 50 rds of "Speer - DWM" headstamped .357 Mag brass which gave me no problems and has been reloaded at least ten times, but those predate yours. I believe Dominion made some their brass circa 1975 and earlier, but have no clue of the supplier since.
