Reading idsman's "Oklahoma Update" post causes me to wonder what sort of rolling headaches I might encounter on my way to Tulsa. Haven't been through downstate OH, downstate IL, MO or OK in more years than I care to admit. Am I to expect a gauntlet of Bubba types eager to nail a vehicle w/ 'alien' plates? I usually 'go w/ the flow' regardless of how much that might be above the posted (i.e., ignored) limit and almost never go less than +5 when traffic / weather conditions permit. Should I plan an extra half day to accomodate Trooper Redneck? Are radar detectors banned? I know they're illegal around the DC area, but I'm staying above the usual East Coast sprawl, aiming for Pittsburgh and then generally SW from there, keeping to the Interstates.Damn, but I miss the 60s when the LEOs didn't have moving radar, lasers, etc. and the traffic was so much lighter! I could make some real time and have some fun doing it.Icon the lead-footed

Ohio is bbbbaaaaaaaddddddddddd. Indiana is getting there but Illinios is pretty cool. Radar detectors are legal but almost worthless in Ohio, the super troopers know how to trigger the radar so that when you gadget goes off they have you. They also run laser and that's deadly. Virginia bans detectors state wide. Pa is cool depending on what raod you are on, I80 has an unwritten speed limit of 75. I cruise 80 all the time doing 75 and pass cops without getting pulled over. Where are you coming from going to Tulsa? I drive truck and have a Rand Mcnally programmed into my head. If you need rt suggestions let me know. I noticed you saying You was going thru P-burg, I79 to I70 to I44 to Tulsa. I live between H-burg and P-burg and I can be in Tulsa in less than 18 hours straight thru driving in a truck, you can do it faster in a car easily.

Oklahoma borders are well marked as to what the speed limits and penaltys are. Last year my boy and I went down US 75 about 04:00 and his radar detector was hit so much he just turned it off and kept it at the limit. I think they are serious about traffic laws but I have never had any hassles with Ok. LEO's. Don't be to concerned and enjoy yourself at the show. You can walk from 08:00 till 18:00 and never see it all. Carry a tablet and if there is something you want to come back to see write down the specific aisle # and table # or you will never find it again! Enjoy. You will be coming in from the east on I-44 it carries a lot of truck traffic, maybe you can get 7mm nut to give you a front door to Tulsa.

If you drive at the speed limit (or a bit above it) you have no worries. I'm 65 years old and the last ticket I had was in an Ohio speed trap 45 years ago. Ohio perfected the speed trap a half century ago. IMO they're a bunch of bandits.

University, I never drove NASCAR and never, ever, tailgate or otherwise pretend to myself that I am in such a setting, but in the 60s I had a nice little European job that had a top end higher than most cruisers and handled far better. The difference between my son and I is that I was (and am) a defensive fast driver who did not take chances other than the speed itself and did not indulge in that practice unless the roads were virtually empty. Never a serious accident (and only four minor ones due to ice) in over 1M miles of driving, most of it at speeds in excess of the posted limits. I don't like the clowns that drive fast w/o regard to my life, either! There's a time & a place for everything. Plus which, I'm taking the foolish minivan, so I wouldn't push it too hard, anyway. Damn thing handles like a tank. Give me a nice sports car and an open road, any day. 7mm - I'm coming from NH. I pretty much know the drill out to Pittsburg. But west of there, I'm on turf I've not visited in a long time. I'm not too concerned about daylight hours when there's plenty of traffic. Just go w/ the flow and watch the rear view mirror. It's the night time, when there's no safety in numbers . I'll let my wife drive then, I guess. She tends to go at or below the limit, but it won't bother me if I'm asleep. That takes care of OH-IN-IL! From your experience, what's MO like? I'll be taking I-79 / I-70 to St. Louis on the first leg and then I-44 to OK a few days later.dano, you mean to say your rep carries weight that far north?! Or is dano too taking his turn at entrapment ?[This message has been edited by Iconoclast (edited 03-10-2002).][This message has been edited by Iconoclast (edited 03-10-2002).][This message has been edited by Iconoclast (edited 03-10-2002).]

I can't say much about the states mentioned except for Oklahoma. When you get near McAlester, keep it 3 - 5 mph below the speed limit. They have city, county and state guys in the McAlester area and the state BCI headquarters is located there as well. McAlester has a population around 30,000 and there are 60 city cops alone in that town. I haven't found out how many county or Hi-Po's there are in that area but I do know that Oklahoma has executed 15 people (including 3 women) in the last 9 months. I figure nobody is going to get the benefit of the doubt in that state. I'm sure my experience resulted from the out-of-state east-coast license plates that were on the vehicle and my 7-day * hair growth complemented by my perfectly shaven head.

It isn't the cop, it's the corrupt system that's designed to steal money from travelers. And I don't have a 45 year old grudge - I was too young to know how to fight corrupt cops.To all you LEOs on this board that was the only time in my life I had the mispleasure to meet crooked cops.

If you're coming down grom NH I wouldnt go to P-burg, just run down to massatwoshits(lol) and take 495 to 90. run 90 to 84 to 81 to 80 west, stay on 80 west untill you get to youngstown OH then stay straight on 76 when 80 cuts off to the pike, follow 76 to 71 to 70. It will be alot quicker than shooting down 79 and across. MO is an ok state, speed limit is 70 but don't venture over 75 or they will nad ya. Just watch out for the women drivers in MO, you think Mass is bad?? LOL. When you get to Oklahoma 44 will be a toll road, speed is 75 and they advertise no tolerance, some speed and some don't, it's chancy. When you get to the toll booth make sure you exit off and pay the toll, if you drive by it will cost you $200 and maybe a ride in the cop car since your from outa state. They watch the toll booths like Buckeye Cops watch trucks.

Wife has parents in Tulsa, so we go up there from time to time. Wife has always cautioned me that the OK trooper just love to write tickets to Texicans, so I try to watch it, and she also keeps me informed as the limits change. So far, we haven't gotten stopped yet.

7mm, I take secondary roads across NH & VT that allow me to avoid that Kennedy cesspool, CT and most of NY. In going to central PA, I've found it shaves at least an hour - sometimes much more - and several $ in tolls. I doubt it would be good for you as the VT portion hits some steep & winding sections and doesn't connect to many places where you'd likely be delivering freight, but for a passenger vehicle, it's a super althernative to the congestion & expense of the East Cost sprawl. Will definitely take a look at going to Youngstown rather than P'burg. Thanks for that tip!Gentlemen: I thank you all for your many insights on the selected route. It is *deeply* appreciated!![This message has been edited by Iconoclast (edited 03-10-2002).]

LOL, I cant run them back roads up there, we truckers are not allowed to enjoy them(crying), we are forced to run them overcrowded Interstates up there. You can probably do better than me running those but I just about have the Raymond NH to Woodland PA Walmart run down to an art, heck half of the time I don't even remember the ride! I have found out that after midnight in CT you can haul some serious butt on I84! Just remember folks, trucks own the night and while you are asleep in your beds, we are tearing up the highways!! Have fun on your trip. I would like to go but after pulling 3000 miles a week I tend to get lazy and not want to go anywhere in the "4 wheeler".

7mm, I always try to plan my trips to drive through the night - I make better time (usually) and you professional drivers are a joy to have around. I can't remember ever seeing one of your fraternity do something discourteous or dumb, unlike Ma & Pa Smith out for a Sunday afternoon sight-seeing trip in the '72 Buick, G. Richard Bigbucks.com in his Beamer or Gangsta Boy in the pimpmobile. I'm sure it happens, but I've not had the experience. You wouldn't *want* to take the roads I use, whether or not it was permitted, bro. You'd wear out your leg and and your clutch. Up & down, up & down, up & down . . . .
