California State Senator Bruce McPherson's son was shot dead Saturday morning. Despite his affiliation with the Republican party, Senator McPherson was responsible for helping create the criminal safety zone enjoyed by his son's attacker.
CA senator's son victim of fatal shooting outside SF home November 18, 2001 -- The son of a Republican state senator gunned down over the weekend, was shot two blocks from his house by a man who jumped from behind a bush and attempted to rob him. Hunter McPherson, 27, died from a gunshot wound to his upper torso early Saturday. He was shot while walking home with his girlfriend, Alexa Savelle, from a nearby friend's house in the Potrero Hill area, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported Sunday. The suspect grabbed Savelle's purse during the incident, then shot McPherson. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he died about 5:30 a.m. Savelle was not injured in the attack. San Francisco Lt. Judie Pursell said the neighborhood where the shooting occurred has both residences and businesses. She said it is not known as a high-crime neighborhood. Mayor Willie Brown has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect. McPherson is the son of Sen. Bruce McPherson of Santa Cruz. The senator told the newspaper his son was "his mother's pride and joy and his father's best friend." Hunter McPherson was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. He worked as an account executive at BizDevEx, a San Francisco sales and business-development company. He is remembered as an athlete at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz, where he played varsity baseball and basketball. After graduating from college, Hunter McPherson spent time in Hawaii before moving to San Francisco about six months ago. Bruce McPherson, who represents the 15th State Senate District, has announced he plans to run for lieutenant governor. The district covers a small portion of Santa Clara County, including the cities of Morgan Hill, Gilroy and a portion of the of San Jose. Bruce McPherson was editor of the Santa Cruz Sentinel from 1982 to 1990. The McPherson family owned the newspaper from 1864 to 1982. "I've known the McPherson family since before Hunter was born," said Santa Cruz Sentinel Editor Tom Honig. "From the time he was a little kid, he was the same: friendly, smart and engaging. His death is an unspeakable tragedy." http://www.newschannel11.com/MoreNews/readstory.asp?s=0111_sonofsentatordies

Better keep an eye on the Senater, as you can bet this will add fuel to the fire..I'm sure he won't realize that it wasn't a licensed gun carrier who did the shooting. He won't even understand that it may have been prevented by another law abiding citizen with a concealed handgun...

If his son was legally carrying maybe he would have had a chance to save his life.I wonder if the senator realizes this now? Most likely not! Fools never become the wiser but more foolish yet.People are dying because they are not allowed to defend themselves anymore.I am sorry for the loss of his son. Any needless death is a shame.

CCW might have given him a chance at least.I am sorry he was killed. I feel very badly for his parents even though they are misguided anti-gun people. I hope they find the killer and kill him/her.

It goes without saying that the Senator will be introducing new gun-grabber legislation as fast as his aides can type it up. They simply won't accept the fact of "more CCW's, less crime". Too bad......for us!!!Mudge the discouraged

Mudge, you are undoubtably correct. Although I wonder if maybe the Senator might realize that "if" his son had a CCW and had been carrying that he might still be alive. Because he may realize this, he will not admit he was wrong for being anti-gun/anti-self-defense and therefore must introduce more anti-gun rhetoric to ease his conscience.

gunnut: I'd probably accept that a *majority* of the ppl in the PRK are Left Coast whackos - or simply ignorant, but I do know a *lot* of folks there who feel just as you and I, so I can't buy 'most.' It's the urban dwellers - that county by county breakdown of the voting patterns in 2000 had quite a bit of Republican blue outside of Follywood & the like. Too bad we don't have a test for voting - having a basic understanding of the rights and responsibilities conveyed by the Constitution comes to mind. WAIT - brain storm! Require a drug test before voting! Now *that* would dramatically change the demographics of elections, especially in PRK!
