I've been knocking my feeble brains out trying to find the cites to the various *Federal* cases holding that there is no obligation on the part of civil authorities to provide police protection to an individual. It's been a long time since law school & I didn't go into practice so I no longer have access to the electronic databases, but as I recall the key case was in upper state NY in the 60s or 70s and either was upheld or denied cert, leaving such a holding standing. I've found several state court decisions and some more recent District / Circuit decisions which I will forward to Carl, but my foggy recollection is that this particular case went up to the Supremes & so would be particularly supportive of his argument. Could you forward him the cite?

Found it! But please keep looking! Undoubtedly, Dr. Corlin will want to discuss this from a public safety standpoint. Therefore, I must have info relating to the safety of firearms/ firearm ownership, their use to deter crime, safety compared to other causes of death nationally, etc. Also,I very much appreciate your effort already! Thanks!!Carlhere's the quote:"...there is no constitutional right to be protected by the state against being murdered by criminals or madmen. It is monstrous if the state fails to protect its residents against such predators but it does not violate the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment or, we suppose, any other provision of the Constitution. The Constitution is a charter of negative liberties: it tells the state to let people alone; it does not require the federal government or the state to provide services, even so elementary a service as maintaining law and order." [Bowers v. DeVito, U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit, 686F.2d 616 (1882) See also Reiff v. City of Philadelphia, 477F.Supp.1262 (E.D.Pa. 1979)].

Good job guys. That would have been a tough one to find. I am sure you saw the extensive post by Josey1 earlier today. Lots of good stuff there. The NRA has resources listed as well. Good luck.

NOW YOU TELL ME! I spent my whole career as a police officer defending the public from criminals. In the process, I was shoot at (many times), stabbed, knocked un-conscious, and subsequently forced to retire on disability due to a severe injury in the line of duty. And now you tell me, it was all for nothing?

Hopefully this pending conversation between Dr. Corlin and me will make your sacrifice anything but meaningless! And BTW, will everyone please stop calling me "Doctor". My name is Carl.Unless you're a gun grabber; then its either "Sir" or "Doctor Pileri", perhaps "Captain" and maybe all three!

Andrew: As an MD, you have the makings of a good lawyer as well. Thanks for the research.
