The government is trying to determine the extent of a young American's involvement with the Taliban, the White House said Monday. John Walker, 20, was taken into custody by the U.S. military earlier this month after a bloody prison uprising in northern Afghanistan. He had been fighting for the Taliban. "With Mr. Walker, the government is still ascertaining what the facts are," White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said Monday. "The Department of Defense and others are still inquiring to determine exactly what happened to Mr. Walker, how he came to be a Taliban, what activities he actually engaged in as a member of the Taliban." Bush administration officials have declined to publicly comment on a report in Newsweek saying that Walker admitted to being a member of the al Qaeda terrorist network, had trained in its camps and even met with Osama bin Laden. Asked about that report on CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer," National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said, "I think until we have a better picture of his activities, it's probably just as well not to comment." Fleischer noted that whatever becomes of Walker, he will not face a military tribunal. President Bush is allowing them only for non-U.S. citizens. "Mr. Walker is a citizen," Fleischer said. Walker was transferred out of Afghanistan on Friday to the USS Peleliu, an amphibious assault ship in the Arabian Sea. Walker will remain on the ship until officials decide how to dispose of his case. Bush declined to say whether he thought Walker should face the death penalty, as some have suggested. "I'm gonna let the appropriate law enforcement agencies make recommendations to me," Bush told reporters at the White House. "He has been questioned, properly questioned, by the U.S government. I have yet to see the transcript myself, but we'll make the decision on what to do with Mr. Walker." Point one! Walker is not an American citizen anymore. If you have a passport you can read in it that Americans loose their citizenship when they go abroad to fight in another countries war.Point two! Walker is in direct violation of the Neurality act. These laws have been in effect long before anyone ever new of the Taliban or any of the mideast scum. But taking these laws into account, "the charge of treason"-they really don't matter much

Shave his belly with a rusty razor, early in the morning! Seriously though, this POS has wadded up his US citizenship and used it for battlefield toilet paper. He can try his luck at the Tribunals!

Cal Thomas, said this guys escaped, is like someone going out for pizza and winding up by joining the mafia.Poor misguided John Walker; it could of been worse, according to the "political cartoonist" portraying Marion County citizens, he could of joined the Republican Party. No wonder the guys confused...he can't tell who the enemy is.[This message has been edited by turbo (edited 12-18-2001).]

First, I don't approve of what he did.Second, he was over there before Sept 11, and like a lot of the Taliban, has probably nothing to do with the terriosts. Our government is making too big a deal out of this, and as usual, is screwing up in the way they are handling it.He should be in a hospital, or prisoner compound, with the rest of the Taliban that are being held.Instead, we , the taxpayer, are giving him the best care available, out of the filth, and are giving him three squares a day.Take his citizenship away and do him like they did Philip Nolan, see that he never sets foot on American soil again. But, the ACLU and the ABA thanks God for things like this. It is worth millions of tax payer dollars.

JJ,"the Taliban has nothing to do with the terrorists"?I wonder where you'r getting your info from, the other John has stated "he went to afghanistan and attended an AlQueda training camp. For many weeks every news agency and government official have repeatedly stated the Al Queda is a terrorist organization, and the reason why we are in Ghan is to do away with the Taliban government that has been harboring this network, who has caused deaths and havock all over the world for several years. The other John new what he was getting into, and can be rightfully portrayed as a terrorist himself. Now, let see.The rest of your post agrees with me.

as a minortity opinion, let me offer up this:if any of you, faced with a legal violation of consequence became the centerpiece of national attention by both the media and the government- wouldn't you like a few aclu lawyers in your corner? if you say "no, rat, i trust in the equitable american people and the legal system," then you should be golfing w/ o.j. if, on the other hand, choose to find out the "facts" before applying the screws, i pledge your support...(as an aside, if what they say is true about his al qeada training and commitment, i think the dude should be punished severely- as what that means-"who knows?")

Hey rat,It's obvious this clown wasn't sent a draft notice by Al Queada, he went willingly, no doubt paid for his own flight expenses, his parents say he was studying the arabic language, He says he was studying the way of mahamad. You don't have to ask a question like that concerning the ACLU, cause I occasional do this moron thing; I try to THINK, and since I have grown up in this free country, that I love, I wouldn't THINK twice about, going to another country to take up arms for their cause. So, because I like to think things over, I would have no need for their services. And by the way the only reason people write books, is because others in this country buy them, anyone in this country that would buy a book this traitor writes, has got to be out of their mind.Having said this, I'm willing to wait till he is stripped of his citizenship, and sent back to Afghanistan, or better yet just try him on the ship and fly him back to his new country.

I don't know the law on the subject, but my street understanding is that joining up w/ the military of another country is grounds for loss of citizenship. If so, he isn't an American, but a POW of unknown status who should be in the custody of the authorities in Afghanistan. I honestly pity him - being raised in KA & DC practically guarantees the sort of liberal brain damage which undoubtedly contributed to his actions. But as I see it, he abandoned his country because of his misguided beliefs, so a fate consistent w/ that act - i.e., controlled by the traditional elements of Islamic / Afghani justice might well help others see the light.

I cannot believe he is still being considered as a citizen of the Untied States. He should be treated the same as any other POW.

News reports he retains his citizenship in good standing, and will simply be tried for supporting a terrorist group, with 10 year maximum sentence. What a deal for Johnny. What a deal for America.

If we treat him with kid gloves because he is an American citizen then what can we say to other countries when they protest the treatment of their nationals? We should be setting an example by throwing the book at him.

i'm starting to agree w/ you guys, still i'm a little confused if he actually fired at any of our guys- not that matters neccessarily, i'd try him on "terrorist" grounds rather than work up some little understood and legally difficult charge...i don't know- this whole terrorist thing is worrisome(legally speaking) to me in the long term, but i'll stow it and man the fences...

Just two observations. We had people who joined foreign armies in the past and stripping them of their American citizenship was never an issue. Didn't Ernest Hemmingway fight with the Spanish and look at all the Americans who fought with the French and English in WWI & WWII. It is certainly good to be on the winning side. However, why don't we get off John Walker's a** until Jane Fonda has had her day in court?? Do any of you remember her??I am a Viet vet and retired military and am not overly happy with Walker but maybe it would be nice to get some facts before we shoot him. That is what I thought I was working for during my 20 years. Tom

Just read a short article about this guy, his upbringing, and his parents. What an eye opener. He is guilty as charged but his parents should also be tried and executed for for doing their absolute best in ruining a potentially good citizen.

TC,I agree with you, we've been hard on this fellow. One of the reasons why I feel down about this guy is, he matter of fact like, told the story, of how our man was killed, imediately after interrogating him (Walker). No feelings for his countryman, No remorse,No evidence that he sees anything wrong with his actions, almost as if he sees himself as a martyr. His upbringing?, what upbringing.See HAIRY'S post on this board, his parents are the ones HAIRY is writing about.

I am actually surprised that the Marines didn't push him out of the helicopter on the flight to the ship. I would have! "Honest Colonel, the crazy * kept saying he wouldn't be taken by the Americans. We managed to pull him back in twice before he actually made it out the door of the Huey".

I'm in favor of putting him on trial in open court for treason or giving material support to the terrorist. That way, if he is convicted after having Johnny Cochran defend him, he can appeal the conviction and have it overturned on the technicallity that he was not made aware of his rights prior to being arrested. He can become a celebrity and write a book, perhaps there's even movie or mini-series material here.
