AK 47 Pre Ban? Is it? Or just parts added?

Hi Folks,
I can't seem to find the info on pre-ban AK 47s that was on here a few months ago, I guess it scrolled off.

Can anyone refresh my memory on what parts you can add?

Is this:

http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=4435471

A real "pre-ban" or is it a recent model with folding stock and stuff added?

Thanks for the help! I've been thinking of picking up an ak-47 but I want that folding stock. (Not practical, but looks cool....hehe)

Merc

NO! You may not have my guns! Now go crawl back into your hole!

Outside of making it full auto or a short barreled rifle you can add as many of the "evil" items that consitute an assault weapon. You can change the configuration of a firearm that was already an assault weapon prior to the ban, that is, you could configure it with any of the following for whatever look or features you want:

    1) Bayonet Lug
    2) Flash hider or threaded barrel to accept one
    3) Pistol grip
    4) folding stock
    5) grenade launcher

Because it was already an assault weapon before the ban, it cannot be turned into an assault weapon. It can't be turned into an assault weapon because it already IS one. You can re-configure an existing legal assault weapon with any combination of the 5 evil features.

It looks like the only other item you could add would be a grenade launcher, because it already has all the other features.

If it's a MAK-90 that's been cobbled, the receiver would still say MAK-90. It would be pretty hard to cover that up. With his feedback I'd say the seller probably knows his stuff enough to know it's a legitimate pre-ban firearm. I'd say it's not so expensive because it's had the European folding stock added to it and not in it's original Chinese configuration, which might hurt the collector's value some. It probably came with the fixed shoulder stock originally, but adding the folding stock (to a legitimate pre-ban assault weapon) wouldn't make it illegal. The collector would prefer to have a firearm as it came from the factory. Also not the condition is only described as "good". That would indicate it's not much of a collector's piece, but might be a fine shooter.

Well, the muzzle brake ("flash hider") is not really incorrect. My Polytech Legend heavy barrel came with the "AK74" style brake as well as the slant "AK47" style brake and a cone flash hider. It's threaded barrel accepts all such accessories just fine. And they are all factory accessories that came with the rifle, as there are special sections in the factory box for each or them. I have been trying to discern the bayonet lug he says it has but I can't tell from the photos if it really has the factory bayonet lug. The end of the barrel does look a bit like my Legend, however, my Legend didn't come with the bayonet as it is the 20" heavy barrel version. I'm not sure what they are selling for in other parts of the country, buy I have seen them with folding stocks in about this condition for about $800.00 at gunshows here in Kansas. At that price they are not "excellent condition" or "factory original" but are still legitimate rifles.

I've sold Chinese AK's since 1986. The folding stock is a replacement, as is the AK 74 compensator. The grip and forearm are correct to the black synthetic Chinese design. The picture isn't good enough to tell on the bayonet lug. If the gun is indeed stamped as a "56S", then it is a pre-ban. As it has had pieces added and taken away some collectors would no longer be interested, but I would say the price is fair for what is there.

The AK74 style muzzle brake might not be correct for a Norinco, but Polytech was supplying them with their AK47 Legend series heavy barrel rifles from the factory. In that respect it is a period Chinese muzzle brake for the AK47.
